Saab And Embraer Open Gripen E Fighter Jet Production Line In Sao Paulo – Brazil

Transfer of technology for 'first tier' defense equipment does not only require a large investment, other than that it also requires patience, it is understandable that the adoption of high technology will be related to a continuous process and will take a long time.

The above seems to be felt in the fighter jet and submarine projects. Not related to Indonesia's obsession in the development of KF-21 Boramae fighter jets with South Korea and Scorpene class submarines with France.

From the State of Samba there is news of a major achievement related to the Gripen E / F fighter jet. Brazil, as a Gripen E/F user country outside of Sweden, has been seen from the start in the development of Gripen at Saab's facility in Linkoping, Sweden.

Based on the SEK38.9 billion (US$4.02 billion) contract signed on October 24, 2014, Brazil as a whole has placed an order for 36 Gripen E/F units, of which 28 units are Gripen E (single seat) and 8 units Gripen F (tandem seats).

According to the agreement on technology transfer, 13 of these units will be produced in Linkoping, Sweden and the remaining 23 will be built at production facilities in Brazil. There is potential, in the future Brazil will order another 36 units, so that in total the Brazilian Air Force will operate 72 Gripen E/F units.

Because, bringing the blessing of a large contract and building a production center in Brazil, the Gripen for Brazil received a special code designation, namely the F-39E Gripen (single seater) and the F-39F (twin seater) Gripen.

And after April 22, 2022, the Brazilian Air Force celebrated the first two operational units of the Saab F-39E Gripen – Arrived from Sweden by sea, the two aircraft with tail numbers FAB4101 and FAB4102 arrived in Brazil on April 1, 2021, then on May 9, 2023 then , Brazil officially opened the Gripen production line.

On May 9, 2023, Brazilian President Lula da Silva inaugurated the Gripen assembly line at Gaviao Peixoto. The inauguration of the final assembly line, which is the only one for the Gripen E outside of Sweden, marks the handover of one of the most significant contributions to the Gripen fighter ecosystem in Brazil.

Quoted from a Saab press release (9/5/2023), it stated that the Embraer factory in Gaviao Peixoto with the Gripen Design and Development Network (GDDN), Gripen Flight Test Center (GFTC), and now the assembly line, is home to the development, production stages , and aircraft testing.

“The start of operation of the Gripen production line marks our commitment to transfer technology and know-how to the Brazilian industry. Here, we will manufacture 15 of the 36 aircraft currently contracted by the Brazilian Air Force. The goal is also to produce the future Gripen here. orders from Brazil as well as other countries. We want Brazil to become a hub for exports to Latin America and potentially other regions”, said Micael Johansson, President and CEO of Saab.

The first two units of the F-39 Gripen are currently being built at Saab (Sweden), while the front fuselage of the single seat variant is being built at the factory with Saab-Embraer, in Gavião Peixoto (State of Sao Paulo).

Since its inception, Embraer has played a relevant role in the Gripen program, participating in the development of the Brazilian version of the twin-seater aircraft.

The following is the planned series of 36 Gripens for the Brazilian Air Force: F-39E (single seat) from numbers 4100 to 4127, and F-39F (tandem seat) from numbers 4000 to 4007.
