Iranian Navy Places 'Abu Mahdi' Cruise Missiles on Destroyers

The name of this Iranian-made missile seems frightening, coupled with the lack of information regarding the specifications of this cruise missile designed by the Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics (Iran). Since it was discovered that it began launching in August 2020, little information is known about the figure of the cruise missile labeled “Abu Mahdi.”

Even so, it has not been long since there was a statement from the Iranian Navy officials, when the Abu Mahdi began to be installed on destroyers (destroyers). Quoted from Tehrantimes.com (6/5/2023), Commander of the Iranian Navy Rear Admiral Shahram Irani announced on Saturday, that the destroyer has been armed with Abu Mahdi cruise missiles.

It did not mention the type of destroyer in question, but there is an assumption that it was the Moudge class, a corvette-flavored destroyer with a length of 95 meters and a weight of 1,500 tons.

The Abu Mahdi cruise missile is one of the products of the Iranian Aerospace Industry with a range of more than 1,000 km. According to the Iranian News Agency (IRNA), this missile is believed to be able to destroy any target. The strengths of Abu Mahdi are quick reactions, target selection management, and the ability to evade enemy air defense systems.

Abu Mahdi was launched simultaneously with the Haj-Qasem Soleimani missile on August 20, 2020. This missile is capable of being launched by various types of sea, land and air platforms.

Among the most significant features of the Abu Mahdi missile relates to its threefold increase in range compared to the strongest Iranian-made naval cruise missiles, namely the “Raad” long-range cruise missile with a range of 350 km and the “Qadir missile” with a range of 300 km. .

Abu Mahdi is said to be similar to the Hoveyzeh missile in appearance. The engine used by Abu Mahdi is a turbojet. Abu Mahdi is equipped with the ability to control engine thrust and has the necessary fuel housed in the larger body of the new cruise missile, making this Iranian missile capable of flying at different speed ranges.

The missile takes the name of Abu Mahdi al-Mohandis, a senior Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) commander, who was assassinated along with Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in 2020.
