Turkey Has 'Azab' – Delta Winged Kamikaze Drones With Customizable Munitions

The development of drone technology in Turkey does not only focus on solutions from Baykar Makina and Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI). A Turkish private company, Robit Teknoloji has developed a type of kamikaze drone (loitering munition) labeled "Azab", which is perceived to be dooming Turkey's enemies.

Robit Teknoloji designed Azab as a multirole kamikaze drone with a delta wing structure. In terms of design, the shape of Azab feels familiar, because its shape is similar to the Israeli kamikaze drone, Harpy, produced by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). Robot claims Azab has a long range and high payload capacity.

Quoted from ssdergilik.com (20/3/2023), launch and detonation tests of Azab are planned to be carried out in the near future. Director of Robit Teknoloji Selçuk Fırat said, that his company has a 15-year history in the field of information and information security, and that they have been developing solutions in the field of the defense industry for the last 2 years.

As a multi-purpose kamikaze drone, Azab can modify and integrate warheads according to the user's wishes. Azab was designed in two versions, namely the version with a wingspan of 150 and 200 centimeters.

The Azab 200 can carry a payload of up to 15 kg and a maximum takeoff weight of 50 kg. While the Azab 150 has a maximum weight at takeoff of 7 kg and can carry a payload of 3 kg of ammunition. Selçuk Fırat stated that mortars, tank guns and RPG ammunition can be integrated into Azab very easily.

In use, the operator can direct Azab with his camera from a line of sight distance of 200 km. At the same time, Azab can instantly hit his target and destroy it with the GPS coordinates he has been given.

Only 5 minutes to install and prepare to launch Azab. If desired, the operator can turn on his computer and send it directly to its destination by remote control. After installing, the operator can launch 5-10 Azabs in a row.

“We have already flight tested this drone, and are now moving on to the ammunition tests which will be carried out in the coming months. We are currently testing the trigger mechanism. We hope that the tests of the ammunition will be completed in the middle of the year or in the third quarter of this year," said Fırat. He added, after that Azab was ready to be produced and could fulfill future orders.

To support operations, Robit Teknoloji has developed a 3-meter electric catapult for Azab 150 launches, and a 6-meter electric catapult for Azab 200 launches. Azab can be launched from trucks or containers with the support of a rocket system that is still being developed.

Azab is designed with a radar cross section design and composite materials, so it is unlikely that Azab will be caught by radar. “In testing, Azab flew at between 50-100 meters altitude, the minimum altitude is at this level.

With a propeller engine, Azab can reach speeds of 278 kilometers per hour. The operator can control Azab at a distance of up to 200 kilometers. It is possible to cover 500 kilometers with Azab 200,” said Selçuk Fırat.
