The People's Army of Vietnam (PAV) has upgraded certain units of the ZSU-23-4M self-propelled anti-aircraft gun (SPAAG) with a locally developed electro-optical system and the Igla surface-to-air missile supplied by Russia.
An example of the upgraded system was displayed by soldiers at the Vietnam International Defense Exhibition (VIDEX) 2022, which takes place in Hanoi from December 8 to 10. ZSU-23-4M has been in service with PAVs since the late 1970s.
PAV representatives who spoke with Janes at the show revealed that the upgrade program for SPAAG started in 2014 and was conducted over approximately four years.
As part of the upgrade, each SPAAG unit has been coupled with four Igla missile launchers. This widens the unit's effective strike range from 2,500 to 5,500 m and target destruction at altitudes from 1,500 to 3,000 m.

Additionally, the SPAAG target acquisition radar has been replaced with a locally developed electro-optical system. The system combines a daylight camera, a thermal camera and a laser rangefinder.
These components are controlled through an automatic target acquisition and tracking system provided by the Viettel Military Industry and Telecoms Group. PAV representatives declined to discuss the issue of unit numbers citing confidentiality issues.
