UralVagonZavod Supplies Diesel Engines For Russia's Newest And 'Refurbished' MBT From The Ukraine War

Deploying thousands of tanks into action in the Ukrainian War was a challenge for the Russian cavalry, especially in terms of logistics and maintenance. At first, the Russian cavalry included mobile repair teams that also parachuted into Ukraine.

Recently, however, the Russian tank fleet was refurbished from the Ukrainian war, their repair and modernization being carried out by 'returning' them to Russian territory.

Quoted from bulgarianmilitary.com (21/12/2022), the updated Russian Main Battle Tank (MBT) which was returned from Ukraine, has partially received a new diesel engine. The Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant, part of Russia's largest tank manufacturer, UralVagonZavod (UVZ), reports it has fulfilled the state order and delivered the order for the needs of the Russian Tank Division.

Diesel engine components supplied to the Russian Tank Division include the MBT group and self propelled howitzer. This information was officially announced via a press release from UVZ.

In the middle of the year, the Russian Federation decided to use mobile repair teams to repair damaged Russian tanks in Ukraine. However, looking at the dynamics on the ground, some of the teams said it was impossible to make improvements under such conditions.

The mobile repair team must not only repair damaged Russian weapon systems, but also their engines. Russia then canceled the repair team's field operations and sent them back to Russia. Later, Moscow announced the expansion of production and repair facilities on all fronts related to the arms industry.

Apparently, the program also had an impact on the Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant. The company says that a technical overhaul has started at the plant. The company also said it has a program in place for launching new equipment. Also, renovation and repair of the existing equipment in the machine park is currently being carried out.

The Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant is the largest producer of diesel engines for Russian armored vehicles, including the T-72 and T-90 MBTs. The plant also develops diesel engines for Russia's newest T-14 Armata tank, BMPT Terminator, Akacia self-propelled artillery unit, Msta-S, etc., all of which are also powered by engines produced at this plant.

The delivery of the new engine for the Russian tank coincided with the delivery of a new batch of T-90M Proryv tanks announced the day before. The tanks have been delivered to the Central Military District of the Russian Federation.

The MoD reports that the main battle tank has commenced live-fire tests and exercises to assess whether the UralVagonZavod has successfully met the requirements.

The Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant produces several diesel engine modifications for various variants of the T-90 MBT. All MBTs adopt a 12-cylinder diesel engine and provide power from 840 to 1,000 horsepower.
