Like receiving a booster package and worrying about being affected by the Ukrainian-Russian War, the modernization carried out by the Polish military has become one of the highlights on the Blue Continent.
For example, the massive wholesale of defense equipment from South Korea to purchase 180 units of the Main Battle Tank (MBT) K2 Black Panther, 48 units of light fighter jets FA-50 Fighting Eagle and 670 units of Self Tracked Propelled Howitzer K9 Thunder, worth more than US $ 14 .5 billion.
Not to mention, Poland also bought 24 units of Bayraktar TB2 combat drones from Turkey, and recently there has been Poland's interest in becoming a partner in the development of the KF-21 Boramae fighter jet.
And from the outer space aspect, it seems that the country with the “White and Red” flag has made a breakthrough, by ordering two reconnaissance satellites from Airbus Defense and Space.
Quoted from aerotime.aero (28/12/2022), the Polish Ministry of Defense ordered two Pléiades Neo observation satellites produced by Airbus Defense and Space, worth a total of €575 million (US$613 million). The acquisition was confirmed during the visit of Sébastien Lecornu, Minister of the Armed Forces of France, to Warsaw, Poland.
“Investments in modern technologies mean a significant increase in the capabilities of the Polish Armed Forces in the key areas of reconnaissance data acquisition,” said Mariusz BÅ‚aszczak, Minister of Defense of Poland. This type of satellite is not only for military reasons but also in the field of natural disaster early warning, which is a very vital capability for firefighting forces.
In July 2021, the two countries signed a declaration of intent to formalize “bilateral relations between France and Poland in the space field.
The contract with Airbus includes two satellites and a ground control station. In addition, Poland will also have access to satellite imagery provided by France's existing Pléiades satellite constellation. It is planned that the launch of two Polish satellites will be carried out in 2027.
The satellite will enhance the capabilities of the Polish military in the field of acquiring reconnaissance data based on observation satellites operating as part of the Franco-Polish constellation. Thanks to satellites, it will be possible [for Poland] to obtain photo reconnaissance data with an accuracy of up to 30 cm, and operating within the constellation will allow imaging of a much larger area of the Earth than for the needs of a single country.
The Polish order came as a breath of fresh air following the failure of the Arianespace Vega C rocket launcher on December 20, 2022. The rocket was carrying the last two satellites of the constellation, Pléiades Neo 5 and 6.
The 35-meter Vega C is an improved version of the Vega rocket, produced by the Italian company Avio and part of the Arianespace catalog. Smaller than the Ariane family of rockets, the new engine and larger fairing allow the Vega C to carry a payload of 2.2 tons, an increase of 800 kilograms compared to the original launch.
