Confronting Chinese Cavalry and Infantry, US Supplies M139 Volcano Mine Dispenser to Taiwan

Various scenarios were prepared by Taiwan to face a military invasion from mainland China. Although Taipei has the confidence to hold back the Chinese attack before it reaches the landing stage on Formosa Island, however, the worst case scenario must be prepared, that it could be that the Chinese cavalry and infantry can really raid deep into mainland Taiwan.

When China's amphibious combat elements managed to push into Taiwan's territory, that didn't mean the end of everything, another scenario had to be executed to be able to expel Beijing's forces from Formosa. For this reason, the use and deployment of anti-tank mines and anti-personnel mines can be an option to stem the Chinese military invasion.

Quoted from defensenews.com (29/12/2022), along with increasing threats from the Chinese military, it was stated that Washington had approved the sale of anti-tank mine systems to Taiwan. The anti-tank mine system that the US sold to Taiwan was the M139 Volcano Mine Dispenser, which was sold with associated equipment for US$180 million.

The US Department of Defense said the sale of Volcano serves US national, economic and security interests by supporting the recipient's ongoing efforts to modernize its armed forces and maintain a credible defense capability.

The US said Taiwan would have no difficulty absorbing the equipment into its armed forces, and that the sale would not change the basic military balance in the region.

Later, the Taiwan military will receive a 10 ton cargo truck of the M977A4 HEMTT type, M87A1 anti-tank mine, M88 Practice Mine Canister, M89 Training Canister, and a logistical support package. The main contractors in the procurement are Northrop Grumman, which will manufacture mines and ammunition tubes, and Oshkosh Corp, which will manufacture the M977A4 HEMTT vehicle.

Analysts differ on what should be Taiwan's defense priorities, with some calling for procuring expensive items such as advanced fighter jets to exert a deterrent effect on the mainland.

The M139 Volcano Vehicle-Launched Scatterable Mine System is an automated mine deployment system developed by the United States Army in the 1980s. The system uses packed mine tubes containing multiple anti-personnel and/or anti-tank mines.

Volcano is offered in two variants, namely Ground Volcano and Air Volcano. For Ground Volcano as to be acquired by the Taiwanese military. Meanwhile, Air Volcano is a mine deployment system launched from a helicopter or an artillery weapon system.
