AMX-10RC/RCR 6×6 – A Challenging Russian MBT Duel Ranpur

The cavalry duel in the Ukrainian War will enter a new phase, where for the first time, the armored vehicles with standard tank-caliber cannons will face the Russian Main Battle Tank (MBT). What is meant by a tire-wheeled gun with a tank-caliber cannon is the AMX-10RC 6x6, produced by Nexter Systems, France.

According to information published in the French newspaper "Le Figaro" on January 4, 2023, French President Emmanuel Macron announced to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, that France would deliver to Ukraine the AMX-10RC/RCR armored rifle armed with a 105mm caliber cannon, namely the automatic which is claimed to be able to defeat Russian MBTs.

With the latest announcement from Macron, France has shown its commitment to intensifying the delivery of its combat vehicles to Ukraine.

As is known, since the start of the war in Ukraine on February 24 2022, France has provided equipment and weapons to the Ukrainian military in the amount of € 470 million and is ranked as the fifth country in Europe that provides military, financial and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.

Currently, the French Army operates a total of 245 AMX-10RC/RCR units. For several years France has launched the Scorpion program to modernize its ground forces with the replacement of the AMX-10RC/RCR with the Jaguar 6x6 armored rifle.

With the delivery of the AMX-10RC to Ukraine, France will become the first country in the world to supply armored vehicles capable of directly engaging Russian MBTs. In fact, the AMX-10RC is capable of firing the Nexter Munitions APFSDS (Armor-Piercing Fin-Stabilized Discarding Sabot) 105 F1 which can destroy an MBT at a maximum firing range of 2,200 meters.

In the French Army, the AMX-10RC is used as an armored reconnaissance vehicle – the Reconnaissance Armored Vehicle. Development of this vehicle began in September 1970 at the Atelier de Construction d'Issy-les-Moulineaux (AMX) to meet French Army requirements for a new category of Fire Support Armored Vehicle.

The AMX-10RC entered service with the French military in 1979. It was later upgraded to the AMX-10RCR standard which offered more protection, mobility and firepower. In 2003, the French Army took delivery of its first AMX-10RCR.

The AMX-10RC/RCR is equipped with a turret with a crew of three. The main armament is a single 105 mm F2 semi-automatic gun with a vertical wedge breech block and the barrel is equipped with a thermal jacket and a two-stage muzzle brake.

The second AMX-10RC/RCR armament includes one coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun and one 7.62 mm machine gun mounted in the commander's hatch.

The AMX-10RC/RCR design consisted of three main sections with the driver seated on the forward left of the hull, then the turret section in the center, with the commander, gunner and loader. While the engine is behind.

The hull and turret of the AMX-10RCR are made of aluminum steel material which provides protection for the crew against small arms fire and shell splinters. The AMX-10RCR is equipped with new additional armor consisting of armor plates that provide additional protection against small arms fire and anti-tank ammunition.

On the AMX-10RCR, the rear of the dome has been extended to provide additional space for equipment. The AMX-10RC/RCR is powered by a diesel engine – Hispano-Suiza or Baudouin, developing 280 hp at 3,000 rpm coupled to a 4 forward and 4 reverse gear preselective transmission.

Ranpur with a weight in the range of 16 – 22 tons (depending on the layer of protection), can be taken speeding on the highway at a maximum of 85 km per hour, with a maximum cruising range of 1,000 km.
