Tarantula HMAV 4×4 – Mine Explosion-resistant Armored Rantis, imported by Malaysia to Indo Defense 2022

In addition to the VAB MK3 6×6 armored vehicle, which was imported by Arquus from France, the Indo Defense 2022 event is also known to feature armored armored vehicles from Malaysia, namely the 4×4 Tarantula HMAV (High Mobility Armored Vehicle) produced by Mildef International Technologies.

The HMAV Tarantula is a V-hull design that is expected to withstand the effects of mine explosions and improvised explosive devices (IED).

The Tarantuna HMAV 4×4 was designed and manufactured by Mildef International Technologies in collaboration with the Science Technology Research Institute for Defense (STRIDE) and the Malaysian Armed Forces.

This Rantis is relatively new, because it was first launched on February 11, 2021. As Indonesia did through PT Pindad by producing the Komodo 4×4 rantis, what Malaysia did through the 4×4 Tarantula was an effort to reduce dependence on foreign-made armored vehicles. .

The 4×4 tarantula was developed over four years at a total cost of RM16 million for research and development. One prototype was built and launched on 11 February 2021 and is expected to be tested by the Malaysian Armed Forces. This Rantis is claimed to use 70 percent of local components, while the other 30 percent is imported, especially in transmission components, engines and weapons systems.

From the specifications, the 4×4 Tarantula has a length of 5.6 meters, a width of 2.5 meters, and a height of 2.5 meters. The weight of this rantis is 14 tons. The Tarantula is powered by a Caterpillar turbocharged diesel engine with 330 hp of power and is capable of reaching speeds of up to 110 km per hour.

The tarantula is compliant with NATO's STANAG 4569 standard where its ballistic protection is compatible with STANAG 4569 Level 2 for ballistics and artillery. The tarantula is armed with a 12.7 mm RCWS heavy machine gun, in addition there is a smoke grenade thrower for self-defense protection.

After the Tarantula was first announced in February 2021, the vehicle was tested for nine days through 700 km of road and 300 km of off-road testing.

Malaysia's Defense Minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, revealed that several unnamed Middle Eastern countries were interested in acquiring Tarantula. Meanwhile Mildef said that they wanted to export the Tarantula to ASEAN member countries.
