India Shows Samar-2 Air Defense System – Hanud Weapon With Air To Air Missile Base R-27

If the AIM-120 AMRAAM is successfully converged from a medium-range air-to-air missile into a hanud (air defense) missile, then what about missiles like the Eastern Block alerts? Although not yet developed as AMRAAM on the NASAMS (National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System) platform, however, the R-27 missile, which in fact was produced by Russia and Ukraine, has also been proclaimed to be a hanud missile, aka surface to air missile ( SAM).

India here is not the first developer to take over the role of the R-27, but the Land of the Subcontinent has at least managed to head in the production of a prototype defense system called the Samar-2 Air Defense System. Released at the defense exhibition DefExpo 2022 in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India, the Samar-2 features the R-27 (P-27ET1) variant mounted on the Tatra T815 8×8 truck platform.

Quoted from the Vayu Aerospace Review Twitter account @ReviewVayu, Samar-2 is referred to as part of the Make in India initiative, which was launched to develop production capacity and technology in the country. Information regarding Samar-2 is still very limited so far.

What is clear as a hanud missile, the P-27ET1 is known to adopt an infrared guidance system, passive infrared homing extended range. As seen in the photo, each Tatra 815 platform contains two P-27ET1 missiles on each launcher.

For range, the P-27ER1 has a maximum range of 84 km when launched from the air (fighter jet). However, the Samar-2 will not use an additional booster, so when launched from the ground, the P-27ER1's range is around 20 km.

In Russia, variants of the R-27, including the P-27ER1, were produced by Vympel. While in Ukraine, the R-27 by Artem. Long before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Poland and Ukraine had a common obsession to design a medium-range air defense system.

Then UkrOboronProm, the state-owned defense industry group (Ukraine) offered Polish company WB Electronics to jointly develop an improved version of the surface-launched air defense system, based on the existing R-27 missile produced by Artem.

The Ukroboronprom State Concern proposed to the Polish Ministry of Defense to cooperate under the air defense system program implemented by the Polish PGZ together with the European defense consortium MBDA. The project was then labeled as the R-27 ADS (Air Defense System) name.

The R-27 ADS medium-range missile system will be used to protect vital objects, as well as ground troops from all types of aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, guided weapons, air-to-surface missiles and anti-ship missiles.

This air defense system will have a range of up to about 30 km for the infrared homing missile (WICHER-ET), 25 km for the active radar version (WICHER-EA) and almost 110 km for the passive radar version (PEP WICHER).

However, due to the storm of conflict with Russia, the development plan for the R-27 ADS was no longer heard.
