All Sophisticated, Here's a Line of Latest Russian Armored Ranpur Protection Technologies

Protection capability is still an issue in the cavalry world, although in general armored fighting vehicles have been equipped with adequate protection systems, anti-tank technology continues to pursue to 'defeat' the protection of armored defenses.

Call it the battlefield in Ukraine, has become evidence that the cavalry must prepare a more protective system to deal with anti-tank weapons, be it anti-tank missiles/rockets and planted land mines.

Based on the problems that surfaced in the cavalry world, the Research Institute of Steel (NII Stali), a Moscow-based tank defense system developer, has introduced several solutions for the protection of armored armored weapons, at Russia's largest defense exhibition, Army 2022 (15 – August 21) at the Patriot Expo.

First, NII Stali introduces a universal modular complex dynamic protection system labeled Relikt. This system is designed to provide protection for the T-72 and T-90 Main Battle Tanks (MBTs), against attacks from tandem HEAT explosive projectiles and sub-caliber armor-piercing projectiles.

In addition to Relikt, NII Stali also features a hinged dynamic protection system for light armored vehicles, an electromagnetic mine protection system and a protection system that can reduce the visibility of the MBT.

For BMP-3

Although superior in flexibility with its amphibious capabilities, armored weapons of the BMP-3 class have serious challenges in terms of protection, where the armor tends to be vulnerable to attack by anti-tank weapons. Realizing this, NII Stali developed what is known as dynamic protection for light armored vehicles.

Initially, this system was developed to increase the protection of the BMP-3 IFV against RPG attacks, small caliber weapons, and light weapons, however, it continues to be used to increase the protection of various types of light armored vehicles produced by Russia and foreign countries. The foundation of dynamic protection is the 4S24 element which has provided the required level of protection and survivability.

Mine Protection

To protect against modern anti-tank mines, NII Stali developed the SPMZ-2E electronic mine protection system, which is capable of changing the magnetic markings on the tank, or sliding it forward so that the mine's magnetic sensor does not react to a passing tank, or causes a mine to explode in front of it.

The SPMZ-2E system is installed not only on tanks, but also on other vehicles (infantry fighting vehicles, armored personnel carriers, cars). Structurally, the SPMZ-2E is an electrical cable that runs around the hull of the vehicle and is connected to the electronic unit – an inverter mounted in the combat compartment.

The inverter, in line with a preset program, generates electrical impulses in the wires, which change the magnetic image of the tank, which can eventually mislead even the magnetic fuses of the smartest mines.

Another anti-tank protection solution offered by NII Stali is the optical signature reduction RPM Cape, which is designed to significantly reduce the visibility of combat vehicles, including tanks, in the electromagnetic radiation spectrum, where most weapons reconnaissance and guidance systems operate.

The system is designed from a special 'hood' made of radio-absorbent material, which almost completely hides the MBT from reconnaissance radars, which means it significantly reduces its visibility in the infrared range, and makes it difficult to detect and recognize ambushes.

The developer claims that a tank covered with such material becomes completely invisible to many anti-tank reconnaissance devices and weapons guidance systems.
