Turkey Test Launches Siper, Long Range Hanud Missile With 100 Km Firing Range

It can be said that defense research and development carried out by several Turkish national companies are very lucky, because many successful innovations have become prototypes, and in the end the prototype actually passed the test, then was purchased for the operational needs of their armed forces. And one of the latest examples from the Ottoman State is the successful test of the Siper long-range missile.

Quoted from Navalnews.com (28/8/2022), the Turkish Defense Industry Agency (SSB) reported that the Turkish Defense Industry Agency (SSB) conducted a test of air defense missiles (hanud) at the Sinop shooting range on August 26, 2022.

SSB said that Siper would one day become the backbone of Turkey's long-range missiles, where the developers, namely Roketsan, Aselsan and the Turkiye Scientific and Technological Research Council (Tubitak Sage) hope that Siper's capabilities can now match the Russian-made S-400 Triumph missile system, which since the last two years operated by Turkey.

During the test fire, the target of the Banshee 80 drone was detected by Aselsan's EIRS radar, and the Siper missile successfully hit the target at a distance of more than 90 kilometers and an altitude of more than 8,000 meters.

Previously, the first test of the Siper Block-0 missile was carried out in November 2021. “The Siper long-range missile system will be improved step by step. In recent test fires, the Siper has shown that it can strike high-speed targets at a distance of 100 km," said Ismail Demir, Head of SSB.

In an interview with Turkish National TV broadcaster TRT in September 2021, Ismail Demir stated that the Siper would be an air defense system equivalent to the S-400 and that they were working on within 5 years to meet the requirements of such a system.

Designed to protect strategic facilities from enemy attacks as part of regional air defense, Siper will provide long-range air defense in a distributed architecture.

According to the SSB press release, the first delivery of Siper missiles is scheduled for 2023. Furthermore, the process of developing new models will continue, especially to engage against both ballistic missile targets up to a range of 150 km (Siper Block 3).

Although there is no official statement, Turkey's future destroyer design TF-2000, which is slated to enter service after 2027, is expected to be armed with the Siper missile system. upgraded can be considered for the TF-2000.

After the US severed its partnership with Turkey on the F-35 stealth fighter jet project and imposed CAATSA sanctions on the purchase of the Russian S-400 air defense system, Turkey then focused on local solutions for major projects.

In this regard, Roketsan has accelerated the development of MIDLAS, the original domestically made VLS (vertical launching system) missile launch system, of which the first deliveries of MIDLAS are expected to be completed before TCG Istanbul enters service, which is scheduled for 2023.

As a VLS, MIDLAS will later be able to accommodate and launch a variety of missiles, including the Hisar family of guided missiles, which are the basic variant of the Siper (Siper's old name was Hisar-U – long-range Hisar). Therefore, the Siper missile fired from the 64-cell MIDLAS VLS is believed to be a compatible solution for the TF-2000 destroyer.
