Collins Aerospace Completes MS-110 Airborne Reconnaissance Pod Test on F-16 Fighter Jets


Collins Aerospace, aerospace solutions and technology provider from Charlotte, North Carolina, United States, which is also known as a vendor in the Indonesian Air Force's C-130H fleet upgrade program, has successfully completed the first flight test of its newest fast-jet reconnaissance pod, the MS. -110 Multispectral Airborne Reconnaissance systems, on the F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter jet.


Quoted from collinsaerospace.com (22/8/2022), it is stated that the MS-110 completed its first flight test for an unspecified international customer. Although it is not stated who the country of purchase is, the Alert5.com site mentions that the possible country of purchase is Taiwan.

The test flights demonstrated aircraft integration, airworthiness and full system performance within the demanding limits of tactical jet flight envelopes. The state-of-the-art MS-110 greatly enhances aerial reconnaissance mission capabilities by providing longer range and wider surveillance areas in contested and peacetime scenarios against equals and close foes.

The MS-110 system's advanced image and multispectral capabilities are claimed to be able to detect targets at a higher quality, even through inclement weather/atmospheric conditions, and can be rapidly disseminated via Collins' high-bandwidth datalink and ground intelligence-sharing architecture.

“Accurate and reliable intelligence that can be shared at national and coalition levels is critical to the success of missions in the Joint All Domain Command and Control (JADC2) combat space,” said Lora Magliocco, director and general manager, Airborne ISR Solutions for Collins Aerospace. "The success of this trial demonstrates the readiness of the MS-110 system to support customers worldwide."

The Collins Aerospace reconnaissance system has been deployed and operates on fighter jet platforms such as the F-15, F-16, F/A-18, Gripen, as well as ISR special mission business jets. The system is also compatible with MALE combatant drones such as the MQ-9. 


The MS-110 sensor is an evolution of the DB-110 system that utilizes Collins Aerospace's proven multi-spectral imaging (MSI) from the SYERS-2C flown on the U-2 reconnaissance aircraft.

From the specifications, the MS-110 is a long range passive target detection and identification equipped with a line scanning TDI sensor type – 6 channels. The MS-110 sensor weighs 160 kg, has a power of 340 Watts and has a length of 1.3 meters and a diameter of 0.66 meters.
