Beijing Breaks Record, Parades 68 Military Planes and 13 Warships Across the Taiwan Strait in One Day

Beijing was really angry over the visit of the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan on August 2. In addition to holding war games in the six zones that surround Taiwan, the Chinese military has also launched a DF (Dongfeng)-17 hypersonic ballistic missile that crossed the island of Formosa.

Not only that, the Chinese military on Friday, August 5, 2022, broke a record by flying the largest number of military aircraft across the Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) in the Taiwan Strait.

Quoted from Taiwannews.com (5/8/2022), it was stated that on August 5, there were 68 Chinese military aircraft that crossed Taiwan's ADIZ in one day. There were 49 aircraft detected east of the center line of the Taiwan Strait, including 7 Chengdu J-10s, 6 Shenyang J-11s, 10 Shenyang J-16s and 24 Sukhoi Su-30s.

Meanwhile outside the fighter jets, two Shaanxi Y-8 maritime reconnaissance/anti-submarine units were detected. Of these, six J-11 fighter jets and 24 Su-30 aircraft directly crossed the center line.

Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense also announced that there are 13 Chinese Navy warships sailing in Taiwan's ADIZ. "In addition, many of these aircraft and ships crossed the median line and "severely exacerbated the current situation in the Taiwan Strait," the statement said.

Not wanting to be provoked by Chinese military provocations, Taiwan's Defense Ministry said their armed forces are using joint intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance methods to fully realize the dynamics at sea and in the air.

In addition to broadcasting warnings to leave Taiwan's ADIZ, the Taiwanese military used aerial reconnaissance, combat air patrols, naval vessels, and standby coast-based missile systems in response.

The 68 Chinese military aircraft that violated Taiwan's ADIZ were a new all-time record for the most Chinese military aircraft seen in the zone in a single day. The previous one-day record was 56 military aircraft, which happened on October 4, 2021.

Since 1955, there has been a tacit agreement between Mainland China and Taiwan not to cross the median line, also known as the Davis Line. However, on September 21, 2020, Beijing unilaterally denied the existence of a center line in the Taiwan Strait. In the fall of 2020, Chinese Air Force aircraft crossed the center line several times and entered Taiwan's ADIZ.
