In addition to introducing heavy weapons such as the Main Battle Tank (MBT) Panther KF51, Rheinmetall at the Eurosatory 2022 defense exhibition in Paris, also introduced individual types of weapons.
However, the individual weapons in question are not assault rifles or pelvic missiles. Precisely this German weapons manufacturer introduced the SSW40 40 mm Automatic Grenade Launcher (AGL).
Of course, there are many types and varieties of 40 mm grenade launchers, but in Rheinmetall's hands, this automatic grenade launcher is offered with a revolutionary design touch.
Carrying the appearance of an assault rifle, the SSW40 adopts a magazine model to house its 40 mm grenade munitions. Quoted from a Rheinmetall press release, it is stated that both the weight, dimensions, and handling of the SSW40 are made similar to an assault rifle.
Thanks to a recoil system that reduces impact, the SSW40 (Squad Support Weapon 40) can fire all available 40 mm Low Velocity (LV) ammunition as well as the new Rheinmetall 40 mm Medium Velocity (MV) ammunition.
Due to the MV 40 mm munition, the development of the SSW40 was closely linked to the independent secondary turret weapon system (TSWA, Turmunabhängige Sekundärwaffenanlage in German) for the Puma infantry fighting vehicle.
Through rapid magazine changes, the SSW40 can be used in close combat and asymmetric combat conflict scenarios. Rheinmetall claims this type of grenade-throwing weapon offers superior firepower in any terrain, even being ideal for dealing with medium-weight armored vehicles.
The SSW40 is designed with an interface that allows the installation of laser light modules, infrared based fire control sights for aerial explosive point ammunition. Several types of 40 mm munitions that can be fired from the SSW40 include HE Fragmentation (HEFRAG16), Anti-Tank (HEDP16), Door Breaching (HEBE14), Air Burst (HEAB), Training (TPM, TPM-T), Illumination/Fog and Sound. & Flash and Stimulus Ammunition (CS).
The magazine model on the SSW40 takes advantage of the assault rifle's handling style, making it an ideal portable infantry-level solution. The layout and function of the launcher design is very “gun-like” because it uses a proven assault rifle configuration complete with a shoulder stock model and an integrated pistol grip/trigger unit.
The aiming device on the SSW40 allows accurate fire to reach targets as far as 900 meters. In its release, Rheinmetall described the SSW40 as the world's first all-in-one 40 mm caliber automatic grenade launcher system. The development of SSW40 is expected to be completed in 2023.
