Milkor 4×4 – Rantis APC From South Africa, Ideal for the Black Continent Market

Milkor's name is quite well known as a manufacturer of hand-held grenade launchers, for example, Milkor MGL MK1L has been used by Kopaska and the Navy's Taifib. However, did you know that this South African manufacturer also produces armored rantis (tactical vehicles). As the company name implies, the rantis in question is Milkor 4×4.

Milkor 4×4 by nature is an Armored Personnel Carrier (APC). The manufacturer claims that this Rantis can meet the requirements of infantry transport vehicles in African countries.

In principle, the Milkor 4×4 APC is used for troop transport, casualty evacuation, and riot control missions. This means, Milkor 4×4 can be used by police, law enforcement agencies, security forces and of course the military around the world.

Protection for the crew and personnel is the main point of the Milkor 4×4, where the Rantis is equipped with Level B7 ballistic and mine protection. This level of protection can protect the crew and passengers against ballistic threats, small arms, artillery debris, fragmentation warheads, and mine explosives. The level of vehicle protection can be further increased by installing applique steel plates on the windows and windshield.

The monocoque hull structure of this rantis offers the high levels of stability, flexibility and strength required during prime missions. It also increases the reliability and operational efficiency of the vehicle. The Milkor 4×4 has a maximum weight of 15 tonnes when fully loaded, while the empty weight is 9.5 tonnes.

What is unique about the Milkor 4×4 is that this rantis is not equipped with side doors for the driver and commander. As a result, the entry and exit of the crew and personnel is carried out through the ramp door at the rear.

The Milkor 4×4 features a roof-mounted remote control weapon station (RCWS) armed with a 12.7 mm machine gun, or can be fitted with an automatic grenade launcher (AGL) 40.

The Milkor 4×4 is powered by an Iveco turbo diesel engine, which has a maximum power output of 176kW. The power to weight ratio offered by the engine is 17kW/t. The maximum speed achieved is 110 km per hour, while the cruising distance reaches 1,000 km.

The adoption of large tires mounted on the chassis offers smooth maneuverability over rough terrain and inclement weather conditions.

For the record, the Milkor 4×4 is not amphibious, but the high ground clearance allows it to pass through shallow water obstacles.

Milkor officially unveiled this APC at the 2018 Africa Aerospace and Defense (AAD) international defense exhibition held in Centurion, South Africa, in September 2018. Production of the vehicle began in 2018 and Milkor received its first undisclosed customer order during AAD 2018.
