Iran Launches Meraj-532 Kamikaze Drone, Appears Similar to a Missile Body Given Wings

After previously launching the Shahed-191 kamikaze drone from the Toyota Tundra, still in the hands of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps, they are releasing another type of kamikaze drone. From a short video released on the social media network Twitter, Iran's newest loitering munition, labeled Meraj-532, successfully took off from a speeding Toyota Tundra.

From information circulating, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claims to have developed its newest suicide drone. The Meraj-532 is operated by the IRGC ground forces with a one-way range of 450 km.

IRGC spokesman Ali Kouhestani said the drone, which is easy to attach to a pickup vehicle, can fly up to an altitude of 12,000 feet (3,657 meters) with an endurance of 3 hours after taking off from the vehicle.

The Meraj-532 can carry a 50 kg warhead and is claimed to have a high level of accuracy, although the guidance system used is not explained.

When compared to previous kamikaze drones, such as the Shahed-136, the Meraj-532 actually looks to have a less modern design, even drones with impressive propeller engines like missile bodies attached to wings.

To get airborne, the Meraj-532 requires a vehicle that must accelerate to the same speed as the drone's takeoff speed. And thanks to such a system, several things are actually accomplished.

First of all, such a “launcher” is completely mobile, because it has to move even to launch. Second, such systems are simpler and cheaper than catapults or rocket boosters.

To take off, Meraj-532 must at least be carried by a pickup vehicle that accelerates to a speed of around 100 km per hour.
