Continuing the previous news which stated that President of the United States Joe Biden would send 31 units of Abrams Main Battle Tank (MBT) to Ukraine, it became the subject of widespread discussion, as it was not known (at that time) which variant of the M1 Abrams would be sent, plus it was later discovered that the stock Abrams belonging to the US military cannot be immediately sent to Ukraine.
As is known, the M1 Abrams MBT variant used by the US military is equipped with a very secret armor protection package, namely Depleted Uranium, and cannot be exported even to the main US allies. As if answering questions from many circles, confirmation has finally emerged that what Washington will send to Ukraine is the M1A2 Abrams variant.
Quoted from Armyrecognition.com (30/1/2023), in a press conference held on January 26, 2023, Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh announced that the United States would be delivering the M1A2 Abrams to Ukraine. However, what is interesting is that the Abrams that will be delivered will not come from US Army stock.
Currently, the US Armed Forces has a total of more than 2,500 operational Abrams MBTs, including 750 M1A1 SA Abrams, 1,605 M1A2 SEPv2, 154 M1A2C SEPV V3 Abrams and 3,700 M1A1/M1A2 Abrams in storage.
Sabrina Singh said, “Because we are not sourcing Abrams from stock in the US, that is why it will take months to transfer these M1A2 Abrams to Ukraine.”
He added that these tanks will require training, maintenance, support which will take a very long time, including to train the Ukrainian people. "So, because of that, why are we using the capabilities of the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) to get these tanks for Ukraine," said Sabrina.
The M1A2 Abrams is the third generation MBT in the M1 Abrams family used by the US armed forces. The tank entered service with the US military in the early 1990s and has been used in many conflicts, including Operation Desert Storm and the Iraq War.
