For the First Time, the Liaoning Carrier Group Approaches Guam Waters

Closing the end of this year, it seems that China wants to 'play with eyes' with the strength of the United States Fleet, to be precise the Liaoning aircraft carrier group from the Chinese Navy, recently seen for the first time sailing near Guam Island, which has been known as the main US military node in the Western Pacific region.

Even though the voyage in international waters was titled exercise, however, internal analysis in Beijing surfaced, that what happened on Thursday, December 29, 2022, showed that Chinese aircraft carriers were ready to respond to any potential US attacks launched from there (Guam) , including attempted US military interference in the Taiwan issue.

One day earlier, on Wednesday, the Joint Staff of the Ministry of Defense of Japan updated (update_ the movements of the Liaoning carrier group in a press release, which said that the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force sighted the aircraft carrier Liaoning, Type 055 destroyer Wuxi, Type 052D destroyer Chengdu, The Type 054A Zaozhuang frigate and Type 901 tanker/logistics Hulunhu, continued their voyage in the West Pacific towards Guam, since the previous Liaoning Aircraft Carrier Group crossed Japanese waters on December 16, 2022.

According to a press release from the Japanese Ministry of Defense, during its voyage in the Sea of Japan, the Liaoning has carried out around 260 takeoff and landing operations on fighter jets and helicopters. The frequency is recorded from 17 to 20 December 2022.

Quoted from Globaltimes.cn, it was stated that starting December 23, the Liaoning Aircraft Carrier Group began moving to approach Guam, for the first time.

A Japanese Defense Ministry source said that most likely what the Liaoning aircraft carrier group was doing was a large-scale movement seeking a response from the US military.

As is known, Guam is the main base for the US air force and navy. Guam hosts strategic bombers and nuclear powered submarines. For Beijing, Guam is seen as an important node in the US power chain in the Western Pacific, which is poised to carry out military operations against Chinese interests.

Chinese military expert Song Zhongping told GlobalTimes the US along with Japan and Australia are building a group of military bases on Guam targeting China. "Guam is becoming a core operations base that deploys all kinds of military services," Zhongping said.

The carrier group's exercises Liaoning in the West Pacific clearly have a tactical background, as they demonstrate their enhanced ability to seize air superiority and control of the sea far from home.

Song Zhongping emphasized that China will never attack US military bases on Guam, as long as the US military does not attack China or interfere in Taiwan issues, “But having the long-range military deployment capability as currently demonstrated, is a deterrent against potential provocations by the US, Zhongping said.

Apart from the Liaoning, Chinese military assets capable of reaching Guam include the DF-26 medium-range ballistic missiles and the Xian H-6K strategic bomber with air-launched standoff missiles that can reach Guam.
