It is reported that the Hudong Zhonghua Shipyard has completed the sea trial stage of the amphibious assault ship – Landing Platform Dock (LPD) Type 071E (export variant) ordered by the Royal Thai Navy, which is 'crowned' as the largest LPD operated by the navy in the Asian region, Southeast.

LPD Type 071E ordered by the Thai Navy is named HTMS Chang (III) which means 'elephant' but is also the name of an island in Thailand where a major battle of the Royal Thai Navy had occurred, namely the Battle of Ko Chang on January 17, 1941. While the marking label “III implying that this is the third Thai warship to bear the name “Chang.”

The Chinese Navy now operates eight Type 071 LPDs assigned to its fleet. Thailand is the first export customer of the Type 071E.

HTMS Chang III was asked to be the largest LPD in Southeast Asia, because in terms of tonnage, this is the largest LPD in the region with a weight of up to 25,000 tons. For comparison, the LPD TNI AL Makassar Class, its full weight is 'only' 11,394 tons.

For China, besides this being the first LPD export, it is also the export of warships with the largest tonnage ever made by the Bamboo Curtain country. Apart from offering it to Thailand, China is also known to have offered the Type 071E LPD to Malaysia.

LPD Type 071 is 210 meters long and 28 meters wide. The LPD is equipped with a vehicle deck, landing deck and hangar. The Type 071 can carry a combination of marines, vehicles, landing craft (LCUs and hovercraft) and helicopters. To shift troops, the Type 071 can carry the strength of one infantry battalion, equivalent to 800 troops.

Because it also plays the role of a headquarters ship, this LPD is equipped with one 76mm AK-176 cannon in the bow and four 30mm AK-630 CIWS (Close In Weapon System) cannons. For protection, the Type 071 is equipped with a 4×18-tube Type 726-4 decoy/chaff launcher.

The LPD Type 071 engine carries a combination of integrated diesel and diesel (CODAD) whose propulsion is controlled automatically. The propulsion system consists of four Shaanxi 16 PC2.6 V400 diesel engines. 


Each machine can produce 35,197 kW of power, while for a maximum speed of 25 knots. The maximum endurance for sailing the Type 071 is 60 days. With a cruising speed of 18 knots, the Type 071 can travel as far as 19,000 km.
