The Russian invasion of Ukraine has entered its 7th month, but the war still shows no signs of stopping. |
Russia claims its troops have launched a "massive attack" on the front lines of the Ukrainian army after being overwhelmed and withdrawing its personnel in several areas of eastern Ukraine.
"Air, rocket and artillery forces carried out massive attacks against units of the Ukrainian armed forces in all operational directions," the Russian Defense Ministry said in its daily briefing on its invasion of Ukraine on Tuesday night.
The Russian Defense Ministry said "high-precision strikes" had also been carried out on a number of Ukrainian army bases around Sloviansk and Konstantinovka, east of Donetsk.
In a separate moment, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov accused Ukrainian forces of also torturing civilians holding out in areas now occupied by Russia.
"There were a lot of punitive measures... people were tortured, people were mistreated and so on," Peskov was quoted as saying by AFP.
The Russian allegations came after Ukrainian authorities claimed to have found the bodies of four civilians with "marks of torture" in the village of Zaliznychne after retaking the area from Moscow forces.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine has entered its 7th month, but the war still shows no signs of stopping.
Currently, fighting is still fierce, especially in northeastern Ukraine, where Kyiv forces have managed to resist and retake some of the territory occupied by Russia, especially in Kharkiv.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukrainian forces had retaken more than 6,000 square kilometers of territory occupied by Russia.
Pictures posted by the Russian military show crates of ammunition and military weapons scattered throughout the territory left by Russian troops.
The counter-attack by Ukrainian troops, launched since early September, is said to have caught the Russian military off guard and overwhelmed.
The military map of the Russian Ministry of Defense even inadvertently shows many withdrawals of Moscow troops from areas that are being contested in Ukraine.
The "defeat" of Russian troops in recent days has even prompted dozens of local Russian officials to start opposing President Vladimir Putin and urging him to step down.
The Chechen leader, Ramzan Kadyrov, even went as far as to criticize the Russian troops who were overwhelmed by the resistance of the Ukrainian army in Kharkiv.
According to the loyalist of President Vladimir Putin, the Russian military seemed off guard against the counterattack by the Ukrainian army, especially in Kharkiv.
State leadership to explain the real situation on the ground," Kadyrov said. Kadyrov also admitted that he was surprised by the recent situation.
"This is a very interesting situation. It is astonishing," Kadyrov was quoted as saying by The Guardian.
Chechen forces have been helping the Russian army launch its invasion of Ukraine since last February. Some reports even claim that Russia placed Kadyrov's Chechen army at the forefront of the war in order to minimize casualties from its troops.
