Here are 3 important things from the meeting between Putin and Xi Jinping: |
In the midst of world turmoil, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Uzbekistan on Thursday (15/9).
The meeting of the two presidents took place on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) high-level conference. This is Xi's first time going abroad since the Covid-19 pandemic.
On that occasion, Xi and Putin showed the intimate relationship between the two countries. Xi even said China was ready to work together to become a superpower with Russia.
"China wants to work with Russia to play the role of a superpower, and play an important role in injecting stability and positive energy in a world rocked by social chaos," Xi told Putin.
Here are 3 important things from the meeting between Putin and Xi Jinping:
US satire on Ukraine
During the meeting, Putin briefly satirized the United States, which is a close ally of Ukraine. Putin thinks Washington wants to continue to create a unipolar world and thinks that is unacceptable.
Putin also discussed the efforts of Western countries to continue to impose sanctions on Russia because of its invasion of Ukraine.
"Attempts to create a unipolar world have recently taken very bad form and are completely unacceptable," Putin said in front of Xi.
"We really appreciate the balanced position of China with respect to the crisis in Ukraine," Putin said.
Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, China has avoided imposing any sanctions on Moscow. Even so, Beijing expressed concern about the war in Ukraine and called on all parties to pursue dialogue in resolving the problem.
However, unlike most Western countries, China has refused to criticize Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
Taiwan issue
The meeting between Xi and Putin also took place at a time when tensions between Taiwan and China were heating up due to the visit of a number of US officials to Taipei last August.
For China, Taiwan is still its sovereign territory with ambitions for independence. According to Beijing, any foreign official who visits Taipei shows the country's support for Taiwan's independence which is a violation of China's sovereignty.
Since then, China has been increasingly keen to launch military provocations against Taiwan by holding large-scale military exercises and sending drones to fighter jets to the Taiwan Strait.
During his meeting with Xi, Putin emphasized Russia's position of faithfully upholding the One China principle.
"We adhere to the One China principle. We condemn US provocations in the Taiwan Strait," Putin said.
Unlimited Relationships
Relations between China and Russia have continued to show intimacy in recent years. The two countries see Beijing-Moscow's "borderless" relationship acting as a counterbalance to America's global dominance.
Xi said China is willing to cooperate with Russia to take a big role in maintaining world stability.
"China is willing to make efforts with Russia to take on the role of a great power, and play a guiding role to inject stability and positive energy into a world rocked by social turmoil," Xi told Putin at the talks.
China's state television CCTV also quoted Xi as saying China was willing to work with Russia to support each other's "core interests".
Russia has also described the SCO as an "alternative" to Western-dominated international institutions.
The SCO consists of China, India, Pakistan, Russia, and former Soviet Union countries in Central Asia such as Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. The SCO was founded in 2001 as a political, economic and security organization to rival Western institutions.
For Putin, this SCO summit comes at a crucial time, as his troops face major setbacks in Ukraine and amid continued Western pressure to make Russia an international pariah.
Meanwhile, for Xi, this year's SCO summit is an opportunity to shore up his credentials as a global statesman ahead of the ruling Communist Party's landmark congress in October.
The congress is tipped to nominate Xi as China's president for another term, paving the way for him to be the leader of the Bamboo Curtain country for life.
