White House Says: Iran Prepares To Send Hundreds Of Fighter Drones And Kamikazes To Russia

Issues surrounding the conflict between Russia and Ukraine are now bearing the name of Iran. This came after the White House said on Monday (11/7/2022) that Iran was preparing to send hundreds of combat drones, including kamikaze drones, to Russia. The White House believes that hundreds of drones will be used in war games in Ukraine.

Quoted from apnews.com (12/7/2022), United States National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said it was not clear whether Iran had or had not delivered drones to Russia, but said the United States had "information" indicating Iran was preparing to train. Russian troops to deploy (drones) as soon as this month.

Sullivan's revelations come on the eve of President Joe Biden's trip to Israel and Saudi Arabia, where Iran's nuclear program in the region will be the main subject of discussion.

Sullivan also noted that Iran had supplied combat drones, including similar kamikaze (loitering munitions) drones to Yemen's Houthi militia to attack Saudi Arabia before a ceasefire was reached earlier this year.

Military analyst Samuel Bendett of CNA said Russia's choice of Iran as a drone supplier was logical, given that over the past 20 years or so Iran has perfected its drone combat prowess. "Their (Iranian) drones fight more often than the Russian ones," Bendett said. Iran is one of the pioneer countries in the use of kamikaze drones, and then the drone model was adapted by Israel, the US and China.

"Iran has a proven track record of flying drones for hundreds of miles and hitting their targets," Bendett added. Even worse, the Iranian kamikaze drones used by the Houthi militia proved successful in penetrating US air defenses and successfully attacking Saudi oil refineries. He added that Iranian drones could be very effective at striking Ukrainian power plants, refineries and other critical infrastructure.

We have examined several Iranian military drones, such as the container truck-launched kamikaze drone, the Shaded-136; then Ababil 2, namely the kammikaze drone which was launched from a speed boat. Furthermore, there is the Saegheh-2 combat reconnaissance drone which has a stealth design, to the MQ-9 Reaper copy of the combat drone, namely the Kaman-22.
