KAI Releases KF-21 Boramae Ground Test Video, Shows Thick Aura F-35 Lightning II

Ahead of the inaugural flight schedule on July 22, the news about the KF-21 Boramae suddenly became international attention. After previously circulating an amateur video about the KF-21 Boramae taxiing test in Sacheon, now it's the turn of the manufacturer, Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) to release a video of the ground test process that is clearer and clearer for viewing.

In addition to appearing mighty, the KF-21 Boramae prototype implies that it is very similar to Lockheed Martin's F-35 stealth fighter jet. The similarity between the KF-21 and the F-35 is natural, considering that Lockheed Martin had a significant role in the development of the KF-21 Boramae.

If you look closely, the similarities between the KF-21 and the F-35 can be seen from the front view, side view and the design of the canted vertical stabilizers. Even so, because the KF-21 is not a stealth fighter jet, the Korean-Indonesian fighter is not equipped with a weapon bay like the F-35.

Despite the similarities, it should be noted that the F-35 is a fifth-generation fighter with a single engine, while the KF-21 is a 4.5-generation fighter with a twin engine. Although the exterior design of the cockpit is similar, the F-35 adopts a canopy model with an opening towards the front, while the KF-21 adopts a canopy model with an opening towards the rear.

In terms of weaponry, the KF-21 and F-35A/C are both equipped with an internal cannon, which is positioned on the left rear side of the cockpit (top left of the air intake). However, the KF-21 and F-35A/C use a different type of cannon. The F-35A/C uses the 25mm caliber GAU-22/A cannon. While the KF-21 Boramae uses a 20 mm caliber General Dynamics M61A2 gatling gun.

South Korea is projecting the procurement of up to 120 KF-21 units, while for Indonesia it is projecting the acquisition of 48 KF-21 units. GE Aviation, as the engine manufacturer, will supply a total of 240 units of F414 engines and spare parts to support the KF-21 Boramae program.
