US President Joe Biden on Wednesday announced a $1 billion injection of new weapons for Ukraine, which sources familiar with the package said included anti-ship rocket systems, artillery rockets and bullets for howitzers.
In a 41-minute telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Biden said he spoke about new security assistance from the United States.
"I informed President Zelenskyy that the United States is providing Ukraine with another $1 billion in security assistance, including additional artillery and coastal defense weapons, as well as ammunition for artillery and advanced rocket systems," Biden said.
Biden also announced an additional US$225 million in humanitarian aid to help people in Ukraine, including providing drinking water, essential medical and health care supplies, food, shelter and cash for families to buy basic goods.
The US aid packages fall into two categories: the transfer of excess defense goods from US stocks and other weapons funded by the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI), a separate program passed by the United States Congress.
Three sources familiar with the details, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said one package worth $350 million included more rockets for the Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS) that had been delivered to Ukraine and artillery shells for the M777 howitzer and spare parts.
The second package, likely to be worth more than US$650 million and funded using USAI, could include a land-based Harpoon anti-ship missile launcher, secure radio, night vision equipment, and training.
Russia's UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia on Wednesday accused Western countries of waging a proxy war with Russia. "I want to say to the Western countries that supply weapons to Ukraine, the blood of the civilians is on your hands."
