Taiwan Coast Guard Patrol Vessels Test Fire Anti-Ship Missiles, Part Of Scenario When War Breaks Open

Not wanting to be outdone by the China Coast Guard (CCG) Patrol Vessel, there is news that the Taiwan Coast Guard Patrol Vessel is now equipped with "lethal" weapons. anti-ship, which recently conducted a test firing.

On May 27, 2022, the Military News Agency (MNA), a news agency under Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense (MND), reported that the Hsiung Feng II ASM (Anti Ship Missile) anti-ship missile had been launched by the Coast Guard Anping Class ship, the Anping. (CG-601).

It stated that the exercise was planned and carried out by the Taiwanese Navy to test the use of coast guard vessels as a naval asset when Taiwan was in a state of war. The exercise is being held at the Jiupeng National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST) area facility and off the east coast of Taiwan.

Because it was intended as a test moment, during the shooting exercise an observer officer from the Taiwan Navy was placed on board the Anping ship. The team from the Navy is in charge of reviewing the missile launch process and other supporting equipment, to checking the condition of the ship, whether there is an impact on the ship's structure after the missile launch.

The Taiwan Coast Guard (Taiwanese Coast Guard) performs the functions of domestic security (setting of coastal zones under national jurisdiction, investigation, and seizure of smuggling operations and illegal ships) during peacetime and national defense missions during times of war.

As a consequence, the capacity to convert coast guard vessels into combatants is an important option, as there is a need from the navy to increase firepower during combat.

The Anping Class patrol ship is a Coast Guard variant of the Tuo Chiang Class corvette model upgraded and modified by the Taiwan Navy. This patrol boat weighs 600 tons and can reach a maximum speed of 40 knots, and has a cruising range of 2,000 nautical miles.

In addition to being optionally equipped with anti-ship missiles, the Anping Class is equipped with a 2.75-inch rocket by default, a 20 mm cannon with a remote control weapon station and a high-pressure water cannon with a range of 120 meters.

The Taiwan Coast Guard has operated four Anping Class patrol boats since 2020 and plans to strengthen 15 of this class by 2026.
