Sweden supplies RBS-17 to Ukraine – short-range anti-ship missile variant of Hellfire

In addition to trying to open the naval blockade run by the Black Sea Fleet, Ukraine's homework is to try to defend its coastline and port areas from amphibious attacks by Russian troops. And speaking of infiltration by a small unit of fast patrol boats, attracting attention is the case of a Ukrainian anti-tank missile attack that successfully targeted a Russian fast patrol boat.

The strategy of using anti-tank missiles to target coastal patrol boats seems beyond prediction. Understandably so far this has never been done.

However, the light and mobile character of the anti-tank missile, plus it can be operated by only one or two personnel, makes Ukraine tempted to try out the 'new' attack model. As long as the target is within range, everything is very likely to be destroyed.

And there is news that Ukraine is currently receiving a weapons aid package from Sweden, in the form of an RBS-17 anti-ship missile. Quoted from Navyrecognition.com (5/6/2022), the Swedish Ministry of Defense on June 2, 2022, has decided to offer new weaponry to Ukraine, including the donation of Robot-17 which is also called RBS-17.

Although referred to as an anti-ship missile, the RBS-17 is a short-range anti-ship missile. Far from being bulky like the Neptune, Harpoon or Exocet anti-ship missiles, the RBS-17 is much smaller, because the RBS-17 is a variant of the AGM-114 Hellfire air-to-surface missile.

Produced by Bofors Defense in the 1980s, the RBS-17 is a Hellfire adaptation for the anti-ship role and can be launched from surface battleships or ground firing posts.

As is known, the AGM-114 Hellfire missile family is designed to defeat armored vehicles at a range of 8,000 meters. The predominant main platform is mounted on the AH-64 Apache and AH-1 Cobra attack helicopters. The Hellfire guidance system has evolved from the semi-active laser in early models to the latest generation using millimeter-wave guidance.

Specifically the RBS-17, with a tripod launcher, this subsonic missile has an overall weight of 48 kg, with a HEAT warhead of 9 kg. Measuring 163 cm long and 17.8 cm in diameter, the RBS-17 can hit coastal targets as far as 9,000 meters.
