The Russian Foreign Ministry has stated that Russia must neutralize potential threats to its security in the event of an increase in NATO troops in Poland.
This was stated by Oleg Tyapkin, director of the Third European Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, in an interview with the Russian news agency Interfax, European Pravda reported.
Launching Ukrainska Pravda on Sunday (12/6), he noted that, even before 2014, the Polish government was increasingly pushing for the strengthening of NATO's eastern wing and the deployment of NATO troops on their territory.
“Of course, we cannot and will not be indifferent to the growth of the NATO group in Poland. The response, as always, will be proportionate and appropriate, aimed at neutralizing potential threats to the security of the Russian Federation," Tyapkin said.
He added that relations between Russia and Poland are currently the most strained in their history, but Russia "will not initiate" a potential break in diplomatic ties or reduce their level.
Ahead of the Nine Bucharest Summit (Format B9 includes Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Slovakia), Polish President Andrzej Duda said that NATO east wing countries wanted to increase allied forces on their territory.
He expressed hope for an increase in the number of US troops in this part of Europe.
