MBDA Systems Releases Akeron 'Fifth Generation' Missile Family – Akeron MP And Akeron LP

There is the latest news from MBDA Systems, the leading missile system manufacturer based in France has released a new missile family called Akeron. By MBDA, the Akeron is described as a fifth-generation tactical missile consisting of two types of missiles, namely the Akeron MP anti-tank missile and the Akeron LP air-to-surface missile.

Previously, the Akeron MP was referred to as Missile Moyenne Portée (Medium-Range Missile), and the Akeron LP was previously referred to as MHT/MLP (High Tier Missile/Long Range Missile).

MBDA said in a press release (8/6/2022) that Akeron was designed for operational realities by combining the latest technologies in high-resolution multi-band imaging, multi-effect warheads (anti-tank, anti-infrastructure, anti-personnel), data link. (datalink), and multi-guide algorithms based on artificial intelligence (AI) techniques.

Akeron offers operators the ability to have the widest spectrum of tactical options for dealing with their targets, thanks to the many possible engagement modes that include – fire and forget, human in the loop, locking the target before firing (LOBL), and locking on after firing (LOAL) with beyond line of sight (BLOS) shooting pattern. And here are the specifications of the two Akeron missiles, namely the Akeron MP and Akeon LP.

Akeron MP

Seeing the design of the Akeron MP, many call it identical to the FGM-148 Javelin. MBDA said this fifth generation tactical missile can be released from platforms on land (ground based) and ships (naval based). The missile operates with fire and forget techniques and the Man On The Loop mode which is the hallmark of modern anti-tank missiles.

The Akeron MP relies on the guidance of a combination of infrared and uncooled TV. Although primarily targeted at destroying MBTs (Main Battle Tanks), Akeron MP is believed to be reliable for destroying targets in the form of fortifications and infrastructure.

The Akeron MP weighs (including the launch tube) 15 kg. The length of the missile in the canister is 1.3 meters with a diameter of 140 mm. Speaking of shooting range, Akeron MP can reach targets as far as 4,000 meters. For the control line, it uses fiber optic (fiber optic) which produces real time response and is jamming free.

Akeron LP

From the target point of view, the Akeron LP and Akeron MP can be said to be the same, however, the Akeron LP is designed to be launched from the air, and is prepared by MBDA as the ultimate weapon on Tiger attack helicopters.

MBDA claims the Akeron LP as the most advanced 5th generation long-range multirole missile that carries the highest level of technology in optronics, warhead, radio frequency data link. Even the guiding systems and image processing algorithms are already based on the principles of artificial intelligence and data fusion.

The Akeron LP, which bears a resemblance to the AGM-114 Hellfire, weighs 30-40 kg and canisters length of 1.8 meters. The Akeron LP guidance system combines semi active laser, TV and non-cooled infrared. Speaking of firing range, with the support of a radio frequency bidirectional datalink, this missile can hit a maximum target at a distance of 20 km.
