Netizens sometimes sneer at the existence of the S-60 PSU (Air Attack Repellent) cannon which is still used by Arhanud in Indonesia. Due to its old age, which was imported to Indonesia in the early 1960s, the S-60 was nicknamed “Si Mbah.” However, make no mistake, the debut of the S-60 until now still shines in modern warfare.
After appearing in the Armenia Vs Azerbaijan War in Nagorno-Karabakh in December 2020, the S-60 gun was surprisingly mounted on Azerbaijan's MT-LB armored shell. Similar but not the same, this jamming-free legendary cannon is back in the Ukraine Vs Russia war. Users of the S-60 are certainly not Russian, but are used by Ukrainian troops as a form of improvisation on the remaining weapons of war.
As seen in the short video posted on the Twitter account @Osinttechnical, it appears that the 57mm caliber S-60 is mounted on the rear mount of a trailer truck. Is the adoption of S-60 effective in trailer trucks? So far there have been no reports on the performance of the S-60 in Ukraine. But judging from the video footage shown, it looks like the S-60 in the trailer truck was put forward as a fire support weapon for targets on the surface.
Traced from its classification, the S-60 is included in a single-barreled PSU (repellant air attack) cannon with a low and medium target range. With the integrated firing system guidance, this gun can go up to 6,000 meters.
Although already great-grandson, but this cannon is in fact still actively used by several countries whose military budgets are tight, especially countries in Africa and South Asia. It is considered as a weapon of the Eastern bloc which is quite in demand, making several Soviet allied countries interested in making it under license, at least there is the type 59 made by China, and the SZ-60 made by Hungary.
What about the firepower profile of the S-60 cannon? Using a 57 mm caliber auto cannon, the angle of elevation of the barrel is -4 to 87 degrees which can rotate 360 degrees, thus this cannon is actually also suitable for coastal defense weapons. The ammunition reloading system adheres to the manual concept with clips (magazines)/ammo cartridges, where 1 clip contains 4 bullets/ammunition. The time it takes to reload is 4 to 8 seconds.
For navigation and target aiming, with the AZP-57 optical mechanical computing sight, the target by aiming through a telescope can be achieved up to a distance of 5,500 – 6,000 meters. Meanwhile, with the help of the D-49 radar rangefinder, the detection ability to hit the target can be further improved.
