Greece Offers ASPIS NG, Modular Protection System For Leopard 2A4 . MBT Dome

The loss of several Leopard 2A4 Main Battle Tank (MBT) units belonging to the Turkish Army in Al Bab, Syria, seemed to be a warning to countries using the Leopard 2 MBT. 2 released by ISIS militants.

And one of the targets for the destruction of the Turkish Leopard 2A4 MBT was the dome, including targeting the top of the dome which tends to be vulnerable to protection. Departing from Turkey's bad experience in Syria, several countries using the Leopard 2 series then carried out a series of developments to increase the protection elements on the Leopard 2A4.

Like the one offered by EODH SA, this defense equipment manufacturer from Greece introduced what is called ASPIS (Advanced Shielding Platform Integrated System) NG, which is a modular protection system specially prepared to protect the dome of the Leopard 2A4.

Exhibited at Eurosatory 2022, ASPIS NG is a type of hybrid protection that combines passive, passive and energetic technologies. The protective elements in ASPIS NG are prepared to deal with modern threats such as anti-tank missile attacks with double head tandem warheads and the new generation Armor-Piercing Fin-Stabilized Discarding Sabot (APFSDS) munitions from enemy tank guns.

Quoted from doureios.com, it is said that the construction of the ASPIS NG protection layer uses a combination of nanotechnology and the exterior adopts Explosive Reaction Shield (ERA) plates.

To deal with the threat of anti-tank missile attacks targeting the top of the dome, there are a number of active protection units on top of the turret that function like anti-personnel mines with directed fragment scattering (Claymore). The activation of this protection system occurs after the threat is detected by the radar sensor system.

EODH SA designed the ASPIS NG primarily to be offered to the Greek Army, of which Greece currently operates 183 Leopard 2A4s and 170 Leopard 2A6s.

By exhibiting it at Eurosatory 2022, there is an opportunity for export, and it is not impossible that a modular protection system like this can later be attached to the Leopard 2A4 MBT dome (standard variant) which is now operated by the Indonesian Army's Kostrad cavalry.
