EMBT – Enhanced Main Battle Tank Crossbreeding German Leopard 2A7 and French Leclerc

It seems that Rheinmetall Defense with the Panther KF51 MBT will not be left alone at Eurosatory 2022. This is because other German manufacturers have also launched their MBTs at the prestigious military exhibition in Paris.

The MBT in question is the Enhanced Main Battle Tank (EMBT) carried by two large companies from Germany and France (Franco-German) through the KNDS Group - Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) and Nexter Defense Systems.

Following an offer from Rheinmetall, KNDS realized the EMBT as a result of the combination of the Leopard 2A7 MBT platform with the turret of Nexter's Leclerc MBT. The two 'elements' were integrated at Nexter's facility in Roanne, where production of the Leclerc MBT was originally carried out. Since then, the EMBT has carried out mobility and firing trials, most recently in Portugal, with 22 rounds fired from a 120 mm smoothbore cannon.

The standard Leopard 2A7 MBT consists of three personnel to operate a manually loaded 120 mm smoothbore gun, while the Leclerc turret is equipped with an auto reloaded 120 mm smoothbore gun. With two personnel, the Leclerc dome appears lighter and more compact, which reduces the weight of the dome by up to six tons.

The KNDS said that the EMBT concept provides a hybrid advantage, where the Leopard 2 chassis is known to be highly capable and can accommodate a weight of up to 68 tons, while the Leclerc turret is superior in terms of weight and a more practical operating system.

By crossing between the Leopard 2A7 MBT and the Leclerc MBT, the MBT is also certified to the MLC70 standard to support bridgelayer mobility. With a light turret operated by only a crew of 2, this EMBT is claimed to bring together the best for battle tank conditions, with the potential to reduce the weight of the ranpur up to about 6 tons.

KMW and Nexter in the EMBT design maintain their respective product advantages and sustainability of the Leopard 2/Leclerc MBT called the Main Ground Combat System, which is prepared to operate until 2035.

The EMBT is 10.45 meters long, 3.85 meters wide and 3.24 meters high. This MBT is supported by the German MTU 883 EPP engine which produces 1,500 hp. The maximum speed of this MBT is 65 km per hour, with a full fuel tank, the EMBT can cover a distance of 460 km.

EMBT

Quoted from bulgarianmilitary.com, it is stated that the EMBT can get the integration of the Nexter 140 mm ASCALON cannon. ASCALON 140 mm can reduce recoil due to its ability to reduce shot momentum. In addition, besides being able to operate ammunition with a maximum length of 130 cm, this cannon can also expand the range of ammunition by utilizing a larger caliber.

Experts say the cannon would have had tremendous power due to the internal pressure, which could range from 10 to 13 megajoules. The ASCALON 140 mm gun can be integrated into platforms at under 50 tonnes.

In addition to the current 120 mm Nexter cannon, the weapon on the EMBT turret is a 12.7 mm coaxial machine gun, and on top of the turret is the integrated ARX30 Nexter RCWS module with the 30M781MPG 30 x113 mm cannon.
