The Chinese maritime world has reached a new chapter with the adoption of the technology of an unmanned surface vessel – Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) – which is named Zhu Hai Yun.
This unmanned ship is not the unmanned ship that we usually hear, the Zhu Hai Yun built by Huangpu Wenchong Shipyard, part of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation in Guangzhou, is a large tonnage unmanned ship powered by artificial intelligence technology with most of the components manufactured domestic.
Quoted from eurasiantimes.com, Zhu Hai Yun, which was launched in Zhuhai on May 18, 2022, is said to be able to be controlled remotely and navigate independently in open water. Amazingly, the Zhu Hai Yun is designed to carry and release dozens of drones, unmanned submarines and other vessels to conduct sea research.
To be precise, Zhu Hai Yun is not a military ship, this ship will later be operated by the Southern Marine Science and Engineering Guangdong Laboratory, where this ship is included in the Intelligent Mobile Ocean Stereo Observing System (IMOSOS) project budget.
China claims these vessels can be used for marine environmental monitoring, prevention and mitigation of marine disasters, maintenance of offshore wind farms, and providing accurate marine information.
With a tonnage of 2,000 tons, this unmanned research vessel acts like an aircraft carrier with a large deck. From the expansive deck, dozens of drones can be carried and released using automated cranes. Zhu Hai Yun is 88.5 meters long and 14 meters wide.
From the performance aspect, the unmanned vessel which is entering the sea trial stage can go with a maximum speed of 18 knots (33 km per hour) and a cruising speed of 13 knots (24 km per hour).
Built since July 2020, if nothing goes wrong, it is planned that Zhu Hai Yun will be handed over at the end of this year.
