Australian Air Force P-8A Poseidon Nearly Accident, Flare And Chaff Attacked By China's Shenyang J-16 Fighter Jet

Unfortunately, the fate of the P-8A Poseidon reconnaissance aircraft belonging to the Australian Air Force, after the incident was 'attacked' by a laser beam by a Chinese Navy warship in international waters (Arafura Sea) on 17 February 2022, is now back with news that the Australian Air Force P-8A Poseidon has intercepted by Chinese Air Force Shenyang J-16 fighter jets in international airspace (South China Sea).

Quoted from 9news.com.au (5/6/2022), the incident was only disclosed by the Australian Department of Defense, although it took place on 26 May 2022. The Australian Department of Defense claimed that the P-8A Poseidon at that time was conducting routine patrols in international airspace.

However, at the same time Poseidon Auatralia was approached by a Chinese J-16 and carried out a dangerous maneuver. The Australian side said the incident was dramatic.

Reports from media in Australia cited details of the incident, namely that first a J-16 fighter jet approached the left flank of the P-8A Poseidon and then suddenly fired flares.

Not only that, the J-16 then cut off the flight path (from the nose side of the plane) Poseidon. Even more extreme, the Chinese Air Force J-16 also released the chaff which is commonly used to outwit radar-guided missiles. As a result, some chaff was reportedly sucked into the P-8A Poseidon aircraft engine.

Apart from Canberra's strong statement over the provocative incident, there has been no response from Beijing so far.

Shenyang J-16 which is a copy of the Sukhoi Su-30MKK. The Shenyang J-16 has recently demonstrated the capability to carry the KD-88 air-to-surface missile which weighs 600 kg and can strike targets up to 180 km away.

Shenyang J-16 became known to exist in June 2012, the design of this fighter jet was taken from the Su-30MKK purchased from Russia in 2000. So far the Chinese Air Force has operated no less than 128 units of Shenyang J-16.
