At RIMPAC 2022 – Japan and South Korea's Largest Warships Will Exercise Together

The biennial naval war exercise which Indonesia is also diligently participating in, Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) will be held from June 29 to August 4, 2022 in the waters of Hawaii and Southern California.

No less than 26 countries will participate in the Pacific's largest multilateral naval exercise, the latest information is that RIMPAC 2022 will be attended by more than 25,000 personnel, 38 surface warships, four submarines and 170 helicopters/aircraft.

Apart from that, there is something interesting in RIMPAC 2022, that there are two non-United States aircraft carriers that participate in enlivening the military exercise which is often spied on by this Chinese spy ship.

Quoted from Navalnews.com (1/6/2022), it is stated that the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) in its warship convoy to RIMPAC 2022 will include its largest asset, the JS Izumo aircraft carrier. Entered the Indo-Pacific Deployment (IPD) 2022 program which lasts for four months (13 June – 28 October 2022).

In addition to the JS Izumo, the Japanese Navy will deploy the destroyer Takanami, two units of the destroyer Kirisame, one submarine, 1 Kawasaki P-1 reconnaissance aircraft, 1 UP-3D electronic warfare aircraft, and a US-2 amphibious rescue aircraft.

Meanwhile, another aircraft carrier that will be present at RIMPAC 2022 is the ROKS Marado (LPH-6112) belonging to the South Korean Navy. Like the JS Izumo, the ROKS Marado also has the status of being the largest warship in the South Korean fleet.

Accompanying the ROKS Marado cruise was a Type 214 submarine ROKS Shin Dol-seok SS 082, which is one of nine Son Won-il Class submarines.

ROKS Marado was launched on May 14, 2018 by shipyard Hanjin Heavy Industries, the helicopter carrier which also bears the label Landing Platform Helicopter (LPH) amphibious assault ships is entering a period of sea trial and installation of various devices and weapons. ROKS Marado is the second ship of the Dokdo Class (ROKS Dokdo – LPH-6111) which has been operated by the South Korean Navy since July 2007.

As a brief comparison of the two carriers that will be assembled together at RIMPAC 2022, the JS Izumo weighs 24,000 tons and the ROKS Marado weighs 18,800 tons.

This is the first time that an Izumo Class carrier will participate in RIMPAC. JS Izumo is said to have completed the first phase of its modifications to operate the F-35B, and it will be interesting to see in RIMPAC 2022, whether the USMC F-35B will land and launch on the occasion of RIMPAC.

If the USS Tripoli, which is currently deployed in the Indo-Pacific region, participates in RIMPAC 2022, the F-35Bs on board can conduct landing and takeoff training on the JS Izumo.

Indonesia also sent its most advanced warship at RIMPAC 2022, namely the KRI I Gusti Ngurah Rai (GNR) 332 frigate carrying 35 troops from the Marine Corps.
