US To Denmark: 'Thank You For Willing To Send Harpoon Anti-Ship Missiles To Ukraine'

Continuing the previous news, namely about the White House's efforts to consider sending anti-ship missiles to Ukraine. While the United States and NATO are determined to open the blockade of Ukrainian seaports from the siege of Russia's Black Sea Fleet, there is further news, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin told the media, that the Danish Armed Forces will send Harpoon long-range anti-ship missiles.

Quoted from news.usni.org (23/5/2022), "I am very grateful to Denmark, which announced today that it will provide Harpoon and missile launchers to help Ukraine defend its coast," Austin said in remarks at the Pentagon after the meeting. with the international coalition and Ukrainian defense officials.

Although Austin did not specify the type of Harpoon that will be sent to Ukraine, there is a strong suspicion that the Harpoon sent will be a coastal defense aka anti-ship missile. Denmark has so far had the RGM-84L-4 Harpoon Block II available in an 8×8 truck launch platform.

This land based anti-ship missile launching platform is called a self-sustaining mobile missile battery (MOBA) which is equipped with targeting and guidance devices.

A glimpse of the RGM-84L-4 Harpoon Block II, this Boeing missile is known as the latest variant of the Harpoon missile family. This variant is an increase in the capability of the "basic" version of the Harpoon, namely an anti-ship missile.

The more capabilities that the manufacturer promises are reattacking capability, agility to maneuver in high-traffic sea areas and higher accuracy rates.

As a guide, Block II uses INS/GPS from a JDAM (Joint Direct Attack Munition) guided bomb with a GPS antenna taken from SLAM-ER (Standoff Land Attack Missile-Expanded Response). The manufacturer promises ease of integration with platforms that carry older variants.

The RGM-84L-4 Harpoon Block II is powered by a teledyne turbojet/solid propellant booster with 272 kg of thrust.

This high-speed subsonic missile weighs 690.8 kg, has a diameter of 34.3 cm, a wingspan of 91.4 cm and an overall length of 4.6 meters. In terms of capabilities, the RGM-84L-4 Harpoon Block II can reach targets as far as 150 km.
