UK Confirms Sending Anti-Ship Brimstone Missiles To Ukraine

This missile is not a new item in the arsenal of the British and German Air Forces, but is a new item in the war scene in Ukraine. The reason is, the British government has confirmed the delivery of anti-ship and anti-armor Brismstone missiles to Ukraine.

Quoted from armyrecognition.com (7/5/2022), during a videoconference with the Ukrainian Parliament held on 3 May 2022, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed that Britain would be sending Brimstone anti-ship missiles to Ukraine in the coming weeks.

Citing information from the British Secretary of Defense, the UK will send the anti-ship variant of the Brimstone missile as well as a new version that will be used from land.

Ukraine had previously requested long-range missiles to target ground targets and the British Government was exploring whether Brimstone stockpiles could be dispatched for the request.

Brimstone was originally designed by GEC-Marconi in 1986. However, production only started in 1999 by MBDA UK in Henlow. Initially this missile was designed to destroy armored targets from aerial vehicles such as fighter aircraft

MBDA UK then developed an anti-ship variant called Brimstone Sea Spear which is an air and surface launched anti-ship missile designed to attack fast moving and swarming ships.

Currently, Brimstone is operated on fighter jets and helicopters but can also be operated on a variety of drone, ground and ship platforms. The system is capable of striking both line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight targets, with a choice of action modes using digital targeting data provided over a secure military network that is fully operational to NATO standards.

The anti-ship variant of the Brimstone missile is equipped with a tandem shaped charge warhead which is effective against a wide range of sea and land targets. The missile has the ability to strike and destroy multiple targets simultaneously.

The Brimstone 2 has a maximum range of 60 km (launched from an aircraft) and 40 km (launched from a helicopter) and is equipped with a 6.3 kg warhead which explodes in stages.

The Brimstone

In September 2020, MBDA UK again developed a new concept of armored defense which uses Brimstone as an anti-tank missile mounted on a tire or chain wheel armored vehicle. According to MBDA, the Brismstobe-equipped ranpur can integrate the launch pod of eight ready-to-fire Brimstone anti-tank missiles.

From the specifications, the Brimstone missile weighs 50 kg, is 1.8 meters long and has a diameter of 180 mm. This missile is powered by a solid fuel rocket capable of launching missiles at a speed of Mach 1.3. The Brimstone guidance system utilizes 94-GHz millimetric -wave active radar homing and INS autopilot; dual-mode, II, and adds laser guidance.

For now, Brimstone has been installed on the Tornando GR4 fighter jet and the Eurofighter Typhoon. Apart from the UK and Germany, Saudi Arabia is a user of Brismstone.
