Tachyon UAV – Russian Reconnaissance Drone With a Design Similar to the B-2 Spirit Stealth Bomber

For observers of Russian defense equipment, the details of what the Russian military has deployed in its operations in Ukraine are always interesting to observe. In the drone segment, much has been said about the various types of drones involved, from reconnaissance missions to surface attacks. However, there is one thing missing, namely the Tachyon UAV.

Tachyon is not a drone that looks scary, this drone is a mini UAV with the task of reconnaissance missions. The Tachyon is a production of Izhmash – Unmanned Systems LLC (Izhevsk). For the first time this drone was introduced in 2012.

Tachyon is designed for monitoring, adjusting fire, target designation, and damage assessment. This drone is effectively assigned to do aerial photography and video of the area at a long distance, if necessary, it can be used as a communication signal repeater. Currently, these drones are used in ground forces, as well as in units of the Russian Navy.

Development and design of the Tachyon began in the late 2000s. Although originally developed and intended for use exclusively in the military field, the technical and flight operational characteristics of this drone provide high potential for use by civilian and non-military defense.

The Tachyon was developed with the aerodynamic configuration of the “flying wing” reminiscent of the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber design. This scheme is a tailless type of design with a reduced drone body.

The Tachyon UAV consists of components of an automatic autopilot control system, power plant, controls, onboard power supply system, as well as a parachute landing system and removable target load units, which may vary depending on the mission completed by the drone. Drones are launched using a catapult and a parachute landing method.

The Tachyon is designed for use in harsh climatic conditions at -30 to + 40 °C, and can be equipped with video cameras, thermal imagers and other equipment. These devices are characterized by their small weight and size and can be used over a wide range of temperatures and altitudes, as well as with significant wind speeds.

The initial weight of the drone does not exceed 25 kg, with a payload mass of 5 kg. This small drone can be used for military intelligence purposes day and night at a distance of up to 40 kilometers and fly up to an altitude of 4,000 meters. Even in bad weather conditions, operation is permitted with wind gusts of up to 15 meters per second.

The Tachyon has a fairly compact design, its length does not exceed 61 cm and a wingspan of 2 meters. Despite its small size, due to its excellent aerodynamic shape, it is characterized by high maneuverability and stability in flight.

A single electric motor is used to generate electricity, which allows the drone to reach speeds of up to 120 km per hour. The maximum duration of the drone is up to two hours.
