South Korea Acquires 40 Bell 505 Units, Becomes Helicopter Training For Army And Navy

There is a commonality of choice between the Indonesian military and South Korea, namely both choosing the Bell 505 Jet Ranger X as a training helicopter. As is known, the Bell 505 was adopted by the Air Squadron 200 Air Wing 2 Naval Aviation Center (Puspenerbal) at the end of 2021. .

The difference is, if the Bell 505 acquired by Indonesia (TNI AL) is only limited to 2 units, then South Korea will operate the Bell 505 in a total of 40 units.

Quoted from a press release by Bell Textron (17/5/2022) received by Indomiliter.com, the Bell 505 ordered by South Korea will be operated to train students to fly helicopters in two dimensions, namely for the needs of the Army and Navy.

The contract, signed between the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) and Bell Textron, says South Korea's first Bell 505 units will be delivered in 2025.

As of February 2002, the Bell 505 has recorded 100,000 flight hours globally, and there have been more than 360 Bell 505s delivered to the export market since 2017. The Armed Forces of the Republic of Korea will join forces with government agencies around the world, including the Indonesian Navy, Air Force Jamaica, The Coast Guard of Japan, United Arab Emirates and the Defense Forces of Montenegro, in using the Bell 505 as a training helicopter.

Entered the category as a light helicopter, the Bell 505 comes with the latest avionics systems and FADEC (Full Authority Digital Engine Control) controlled dual channel engines, the Bell 505 is the lightest and most advanced single engine helicopter on the market.

To make it easier for pilots, the Bell 505 is also equipped with an engine system that can be operated digitally relying on dual channel FADEC.

The Bell 505 is powered by a Turbomeca Arrius 2R engine that can generate power of up to 505 shaft horsepower (shp) during takeoff and 459 shp when flying. From the specifications, this training helicopter with 1 crew and 4 passengers can fly at a maximum speed of 231 km per hour and can fly for 3.9 hours. The Bell 505 is capable of hovering at an altitude of 4,000 meters.
