Serna Class Landing Craft Utility – Mainstay of Russian Amphibious Landing Operations

The tonnage is not large, but this type of ship plays an important role in the amphibious landing operation. This is what is called an LCU (Landing Craft Utility), and the Russian Navy has also deployed its newest type of LCU in its military operations in Ukraine, especially in the Snake Island area.

The LCU in question is the Serna Class (Project 11770E) air cavity fast landing craft. When compared to LCUs in general, Serna Class appears with a more modern design, especially at the streamlined angle of the bridge.

From the construction aspect, the Serna Class is characterized by the presence of an air cavity at the bottom of its hull. The cavities isolate the bulk of the hull from contact with water, achieving a significant reduction in resistance and providing a speed of 30 knots, and is claimed to reduce fuel consumption.

This LCU is designed to carry combat vehicles, logistics and troops to the shores of the target. Quoted from the Rosoboronexport website, it is stated that in peacetime, Serna Class can be used to deliver disaster response equipment and supplies to coastal points as far as 600 miles (965 km).

Serna Class LCUs are built with corrosion-resistant materials, extruded parts and panels, and robust power generation. This LCU is equipped with an integrated movement and facilities management system.

In sea state 2 conditions (maximum sea wave height of 0.5 meters), Serna Class can transport cargo and equipment up to 45 tons at a speed of 30 knots (55.5 km per hour).

Meanwhile, in sea state 3 (maximum sea wave height of 1.25 meters), the maximum speed of the LCU is 27 knots (50 km per hour). Even so, the shipping capacity is limited to sea state 5 (sea waves 4 meters).

From the specifications, the Serna Class has a length of 25.6 meters, a width of 5.8 meters and a full weight of 105 tons. The Serna Class is powered by 2x M503-A3 2×2,200 kW (2×3,000 hp) diesel engines; electrical power system2 x DGR1A-16/1500 diesel-generators; propulsion 2x four-bladed vented fixed-pitch propellers.

Manned by four personnel, the Serna Class has one day of endurance and is equipped with 4 medium PKMB 7.62 mm caliber machine guns and 4 MANPADS Igla missiles.
