Russia's Black Sea Fleet Reinforced B-871 Alrosa – Waterjet-engined Electric Diesel Submarine

There is good news for the Russian military, because the Black Sea Fleet will soon be reinforced by the B-871 Alrosa diesel-electric submarine. Indeed, this is not a new submarine, in fact it can be called one of the oldest Kilo Class. However, Alrosa soon entered the service period in the Black Sea Fleet after completing the overhaul stage.

The completion of the Alrosa overhaul phase was announced by the Russian News Agency, Tass, on 11 May. It was mentioned, before being handed over to the Russian Navy, Alrosa would first undergo a sea trial phase and various feasibility trials to ensure safety in its operation.

Quoted from navyrecognition.com, Alrosa is the oldest submarine in the Black Sea Fleet. The assets of the Black Sea Fleet consist of four Kilo Class units, with two of them currently on assignment in Syria.

Alrosa is propelled by waterjet engines, not propeller propulsion, which ensures that the submarine has maximum stealth. Because it uses a waterjet engine, this submarine is dubbed a 'black hole' abroad.

There is something unique about Alrosa's history, this submarine was built by the Krasnoye Sormovo Shipyard in the city of Gorky (now known as Nizhny Novgorod) shortly before the breakup of the Soviet Union and was included in the experimental project 877 (Project 877 Paltus) which NATO called the Kilo Class. .

In short, the B-871 Alrosa is a Kilo Class diesel-electric submarine that joined the Soviet Navy in 1990 and is now active with the Russian Navy's Black Sea Fleet. The B-871 Alrosa was launched on 10 September 1989 and commissioned on 1 December 1990 before the breakup of the Soviet Union.

In 1991, that is, during the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the crew of this submarine swore allegiance to Ukraine. Despite serving in the Ukrainian Navy service, these submarines have limited service due to a lack of spare parts. Finally, through a deal between Ukraine and Russia, the submarine returned to Russian service in 1997.

This submarine can reach an underwater speed of 20 knots (37 km per hour), dive to a depth of 300 meters, and has an endurance of 45 days. The crew consists of 52 people.

Alrosa can carry up to four Kalibr cruise missiles for surface attack (3M-54 and 3M-541) and ground targets (3M-14 cruise missiles) and has the latest electronic equipment.

There are six 533 mm caliber torpedo launcher tubes. In one sail, this Kilo Class can carry 18 torpedo units.
