Russian Bomb Hits a School in Ukraine, 60 People Possibly Killed

As many as 60 people may have died when a bomb hit a village school in eastern Ukraine, the governor of Luhansk said on Sunday.

Luhansk Governor Serhiy Gaidai said a school in Bilohorivka, where about 90 people have taken refuge, was hit by a Russian bomb on Saturday (7/5) which then set it on fire.

"There is almost no hope of any survivors. An aerial bomb exploded in the middle (of the building)," Gaidai wrote on the Telegram messaging app, as quoted by Reuters.

"There were about 90 people in the school, 27 were rescued. Around 60 people may have died," he added.

Reuters could not immediately verify the account. And, there was no response from Russia on the report.

Ukraine and its Western allies accuse Russian forces of targeting civilians in the war, something Moscow denies.

In Mariupol, Deputy Commander of the Azov Regiment Captain Sviatoslav Palamar hiding in the Azovstal steelworks appealed to the international community for help in evacuating wounded soldiers.

"We will continue to fight as long as we are alive to repel the Russian invaders," Palamar told an online press conference.

More than 170 civilians were evacuated from the Mariupol area on Sunday. This brings the total to about 600 people who survived during rescue operations in the past week, the United Nations said.
