From Paris, France, on May 17, 2022, a cooperation agreement between Thales and PT Len Industri was signed. The point of the collaboration is related to the procurement of 13 GCI (Ground-Controlled Interception) radar units ordered by the Ministry of Defense for the needs of the Indonesian Air Force and the National Air Defense Command (Kohanudnas). What is interesting about this collaboration is that some components of the GCI radar of the Ground Master GM403 type will be made in Indonesia.
A source from PT Len Industri revealed that all the radars will still be made in France, but components such as Octopark – part of the radar transmitter, will later be made by PT Len Industri as a technology transfer receiver partner (ToT) from Thales.
Apart from this good news in the national defense line, of course the question is, what are the capabilities of the Thales Ground Master GM403?
Thales GM403 is a type of full digital radar with 3D (three-dimensional) measurement capabilities in the S-band frequency. Including the GM400 radar family, this radar with AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) technology can detect various types of targets with high precision.
Having an accuracy in the range of 50 meters, the Thales GM403 can detect targets instrumentally from a distance of 470 km and identify targets from a distance of 390 km with an accuracy of 50 meters.
The armyrecognition.com site says the rotation speed of the Thales GM403 antenna is 6 rpm and the detection height of this radar reaches 30,500 meters with an antenna elevation of 20 degrees. Features that complement this radar include Electronic Counter-CounterMeasures (ECCM) and Tactical ballistic missile (TBM) detection.
The Thales GM403 is a mobile deployment, where the radar system can be moved with the support of a 20-foot container, and can be transported in a 6×6 or 8×8 trailer truck. This 10-ton container package can also be carried into the cargo hold of an aircraft class C-130 Hercules. For operations, this radar requires 4 personnel, while deployment only takes one hour by 6 personnel.
Before being operated by Indonesia, Malaysia had already operated the Thales GM403. By Malaysia, this radar was deployed in Sarawak, which is nothing but focused on monitoring air traffic in the South China Sea.
This radar will reportedly complement the existing radar sites in the cities of Labuan and Samarahan, thereby strengthening the Malaysian Air Force's National Air Defense System (SPUN).
