Javelin Joint Venture Gets Blessings of the Ukrainian War, Wins Contract for Production of 1,300 Javelin missiles

Not long after the leadership of Lockheed Martin said it would double production of Javelin anti-tank missiles on May 8, now the latest news is that the United States Army (US Army) has awarded a production contract for the Javelin missile and related equipment and services for a total value of US $ 309 million. .

Quoted from a press release lockheedmartin.com (16/5/2022), it is said that the contract includes more than 1,300 Javelin missiles, the funding of which is taken from the Law on Additional Budget Allocations for Ukraine.

In addition, Lockheed Martin will also manufacture Javelin for several international customers including Norway, Albania, Latvia and Thailand.

The FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank missile was developed and produced by the Javelin Joint Venture, a company formed between Raytheon Missiles & Defense and Lockheed Martin. The versatile anti-tank and multi-target missile systems offer fire-and-forget capability at its full range – up to 4 kilometers in most operational conditions.

“The Javelin Joint Venture is working hard to meet this increasing demand,” said Dave Pantano, vice president of Javelin Joint Venture and director of the Lockheed Martin Javelin program. He added, "The Javelin's unique capabilities have proven to be a difference maker in defining moments, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with the Army to deliver this critical weapon system."

Lockheed Martin is investing to increase the production rate of Javelin missiles, from the current 2,100 units per year to 4,000 units per year. Likewise, Raytheon is investing in maximizing production of reusable light-weight command launch units (CLUs).

In its combat title, the FGM-148 Javelin is designed to operate in pairs as a missile and aiming/controlling system called the CLU. The missile system, which is housed in a fiberglass tube, is single-use.

So once the missile launches, the gunner just dumps the missile's container canister and releases the CLU. CLU can be used many times, as long as there is still a battery that powers it.

To date, the Javelin Joint Venture has produced more than 50,000 Javelin missiles and more than 12,000 reusable launcher systems. The Javelin is expected to remain in the US arsenal. to 2050 and prepared for continuous improvement to maintain overmatch against emerging threats and to support evolving operational needs.
