Known as the most flexible self propelled howitzer with high maneuverability, the Humvee 2-CT Hawkeye 105 mm MHS (Mobile Howitzer System) is attractive for adoption in modern warfare operations. And apparently the design of the Humvee 2-CT Hawkeye 105 mm MHS has caught the attention of rival countries, the United States, where Iran has released a light self propelled howitzer from the Aras 4×4 Rantis jeep mated to a 105 mm M101 towing howitzer.
Aras 4×4 is also known as the Iranian Hummer / Humvee and is known as one of the tactical vehicles (rantis) that is widely used by military / civilian units in Iran. Aras itself is not the first rantis made in Iran, the first being the Sapphire 4×4 which was launched in 2001. Aras 1 4×4 then launched in 2011, and seven years later it was upgraded to Aras 2 4×4.
Aras 1 was inaugurated in 2011 by the Minister of Defense Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi. This vehicle is similar to the US-made Hummer and is equipped with a 3153 cc Z24 turbocharged diesel engine that produces 133 hp.
Aras carries a modified chassis from the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40. This vehicle is able to withstand a load of 1,450 kg on the front axle and 2,700 kg on the rear axle. This rantis suspension at the front uses an all-float roller spring with a three-lever mechanism, and at the rear uses an all-float spring with a five-axis mechanism.
Aras adopts a hydraulic steering system, while the braking system is a two hydraulic circuit equipped with an ABS anti-lock braking system and an EBS electronic braking system (EBS).
Aras with two integrated cabins can be made in commando, combat vehicle and light logistics variants. Aras can be equipped with armor protection in the passenger compartment, engine and fuel tank area.
Aras 2 4×4 was unveiled in 2019, some of the features on Aras 2 include high mobility in rough terrain, mounting of weapons and military equipment with increased weight, increased power and torque, high strength to weight ratio compared to the previous generation in terms of engine, high operational radius (750 km), lower fuel consumption, emission standards, acceleration and load carrying capacity.
Aras 2 is a joint production of the Iran Defense Industries Organization and several automotive companies. As an upgraded version of Aras 1, Aras 2 has 200 hp and 470 Nm of torque, Aras 2 has 50 percent more power and torque than Aras 1.
While the weapon is the M101, it is undoubtedly a classic towed howitzer made in the United States. Starting out in the 40s, this gun was a definite part of the Second World War, used by the US both against Nazi Germany and Japan in the Pacific arena.
By the end of World War II, 8,536 M101 guns had been produced. From the information obtained, until 1953, this best-selling cannon had produced 10,202 units. With a projectile speed of 427 meters per second, the maximum firing range of this howitzer is 11,270 meters.
One thing that becomes a question from the adoption of the M101 howitzer on the Aras 4×4 range, is how the light ranger's ability to withstand the repulsion effect when the shot is fired.
