In order to increase the accuracy of the PzH 2000 155 mm self propelled howitzer (SPH) which was sent by the Netherlands to Ukraine, the German government is rumored to be sending a COBRA (Counter Battery Radar) system.
COBRA is nothing but a mobile weapon location radar (radar firefinder) with 3D Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) technology which is used to detect the origin of the trajectory of enemy artillery attacks.
As previously announced, the PzH 2000 assets belonging to the Dutch Army will be transferred to Ukraine. Meanwhile, Germany will donate munitions supplies and training to Ukrainian military personnel.
From the specifications, the COBRA radar is able to detect the direction of the artillery projectile trajectory from a distance of 100 km. What can be detected is not only artillery projectiles such as howitzers, but also the direction of origin of projectiles such as mortars and rockets.
From a detection range of 100 km, COBRA is able to locate and classify up to 40 enemy artillery batteries within two minutes. COBRA can also monitor ceasefire violations when placed in a peacekeeping role.
The COBRA system is housed in a single vehicle, and can achieve rapid deployment requirements with high mobility. Powerful software algorithms automatically compensate for terrain tilt (COBRA pitch and roll) and calculate each search beam elevation to crawl the radar horizon before transmission begins.
The Bundeswehr website says the COBRA counter-artillery detection radar is considered the world's most advanced ground-based weapon location discovery system, consisting of a high-performance radar, advanced processing, and an integrated and flexible command, control and communication system.
The design includes state-of-the-art digital processing with a solid-state phased array antenna consisting of several thousand transmit/receive modules.
COBRA was jointly developed by Thales, Airbus Defense and Space and Lockheed Martin for the German Armed Forces, French Army and British Army.
Quoted from defense-blog.com, Ukraine initially requested the supply of 40 COBRA systems. At the same time, only 3 to 5 systems of the 19 stock Bundeswehr Jermab are available for delivery to Ukraine.
