Serbia established itself as a European country that acquired Chinese defense equipment. After bringing in the CH-92A combatant drone (UCAV) produced by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), which incidentally became the first UCAV produced by China to operate in European skies, now the latest news says that Serbia has acquired the FK-3 Air. Defense Systems.
Quoted from Janes.com (6/5/2022), the FK-3 Air Defense System is an export variant of the HQ-22, this weapon system is produced by Jiangnan Space Industry, which is part of the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC).
The FK-3 battery is the newest hanud armament arsenal for the Serbian Armed Forces which was demonstrated at the tit (Shield) 2022 military force demonstration at the Batajnica air base on April 30, 2022.
Serbia ordered the FK-3 in 2019 and its components were delivered to Batajnica on 9–11 April 2022 by six Y-20A transport aircraft belonging to the Chinese Air Force.
The FK-3 will serve in the 2nd Air Defense Missile Battalion of the Serbian Air Force and the 250th Air Defense Missile Brigade of the Air Defense, primarily to protect the capital, Belgrade, but also the strategically important cities of Novi Sad, Ni and Kragujevac.
The FK-3 or HQ-22 (Hóng Qí-22/Red Banner-22) is a medium-range guided missile system relying on semi-active radar homing/radio-command guidance air defense. The FK-3/HQ-22 battery includes one radar vehicle and three erector transporter launch vehicles each equipped with four missiles. Each battery can reportedly strike six air targets simultaneously.
This missile system can be paired with the Patriot missile system from the United States and the S-300 missile system from Russia.
Despite having a shorter range than S-300 variants such as the S-300PMU-2, the HQ-22 is considered to have the advantage of superior electronic countermeasures (ECM) and superior capability against stealth targets at shorter ranges.
Powered by a solid fuel rocket motor the HQ-22 has a range of up to 170 kilometers (110 miles) and can strike targets at altitudes from 50 meters (160 feet) to 27 kilometers (17 miles). The missile is guided by semi-active radar guidance and can strike ballistic and cruise missiles, aircraft, helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles.
The system is capable of launching 12 missiles to attack up to six targets simultaneously and striking up to 36 targets with 72 missiles when multiple units fire, under the control of a command vehicle.
The launch vehicle is based on an 8×8 configuration chassis manufactured by the Hanyang Special Purpose Vehicle Institute. The HQ-22 launches its missiles at an angle, not vertically. Apart from being used by China and Serbia, the HQ-22/FK-3 has also been operated by Myanmar, Thailand and Turkmenistan.
