Warren Buffett Praises Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Discusses Old Age

Longtime investor Warren Buffett praised Tesla CEO Elon Musk, billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, and Federal Reserve Governor Jerome Powell during a Charlie Rose interview released on Thursday (14/4).

The 91-year-old investor and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway also discusses his legacy, how old his influence is on him, and why he admires Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates.

Launching Market Businessinsider, Sunday (17/4), Here are 12 of Buffett's best quotes from interviews:

1. "You don't have to be a genius at what I do, that's the good thing about it. I'm a smart guy who is very passionate about what I do, so I've spent my whole life doing it, and I've surrounded myself with people -the one who brings out the best in me."

2. "I know I'm going to win from time to time. That doesn't mean I'm going to beat anyone else, or anything like that. But this game is really, really, really easy if you have the right lessons in mind about what you're buying." (Buffett emphasizes that stocks are part of the business, not a bet that should be monitored on a day-to-day basis.)

3. "We had a replacement but he didn't warm up. I was in extra time but I was out there."

4. "Jay Powell equals Paul Volcker when it comes to doing the things that need to be done that day." (Buffett was referring to the Fed chair moving quickly to save the US financial system when the pandemic brought it to "the brink of chaos" in March 2020.)

5. "It's not like the 50 richest people in this country (United States) can say, 'I'm just going to eat it all.'" (Buffett argues that while Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, and Steve Jobs amassed huge fortunes, they also shared inventions them, improving the lives of millions of people).

6. "Elon faced General Motors and Ford and Toyota, and everyone who had all of this, and he had an idea and he won. That's America. You can't dream of it. It's incredible."

7. "I'm a rotting machine that still feels wonderful. I can't add a bunch of numbers remotely as fast as I could. Sometimes I can't remember why I was climbing stairs. I forget names so easily. I can't read as fast as I can. I usually read. I can't hear either, I can't see either, my balance isn't good. But it doesn't interfere with my happiness, my job, whatever."

8. “An extraordinarily rich country like America can ensure that everyone not only has access, but also feels they have access, to fairly fast and essentially free health care. The ability to get good medical attention, fast enough, has to be there for every American. It's that simple."

9. "It couldn't have happened, but it did. If they stopped in Omaha on their way from New York to Seattle and he said, 'What do you think of this idea?' I'd say, 'Good luck, Jeff.'" (Commenting on Amazon's evolution from online bookseller to tech giant under founder Jeff Bezos.)

10. "You won't read anything more beautiful than what MacKenzie has written. She expresses a philosophy of life that I think is a good model anyone can find." (Buffett credits Bezos' ex-wife, MacKenzie Scott, for her philanthropic efforts.)

11. "Not only with money, they do it with time. Time is the most precious thing you have, quite a lot. They give me something I don't want to give - that much time. I'd rather give my time to Berkshire." (Buffett touts Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates for their philanthropy.)

12. “What really means a lot to me is the Berkshire record – that's what I've done. I painted the painting, the world was able to bid on it at auction. It was fun, and so much more fun doing it with Charlie as my partner than doing it alone (Buffett referring to his old business partner, Charlie Munger).
