So far, we have not heard about the involvement of drones in operations at sea in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The actions of reconnaissance drones and combat drones (UCAV) are more massively used in warfare on land.
However, today (12/4/2022), there was news that a Ukrainian Bayraktar (possibly TB2) drone was shot down by the Russian Navy frigate Admiral Essen (Admiral Grigorovich Class).
Quoted from the Russian News Agency - Tass.com, the Russian Defense Ministry said the Russian Navy was forced to destroy the drone, because it continued to spy on convoys of warships of the Black Sea Fleet, as well as Russian military activities on the Crimean Peninsula and in southern Ukraine.
Interestingly, it was explained that the Bayraktar drone was destroyed using the Shtil air defense missile system (hanud). Missiles on the Shtil system are fired vertically launching system (VLS) from the bow of the Admiral Essen frigate.
The name Shtil still feels foreign to netizens in Indonesia, according to missilery.info, Shtil belongs to the medium-range guided missile class, where this missile can pursue targets at an altitude of 5 to 15,000 meters.
The Shtil missile system was developed by the Moscow Research Institute of Radioelectronics “Altair” and is a further development of the M-22 “Hurricane” hanud missile system. The missile components are based on the Dolgoprudnensk Research and Production Enterprise (DRPP) 9M317ME platform.
The distinctive feature of Shtil is the adoption of VLS, a multifunctional radar with phased antenna arrays and computational control facilities with an open architecture, extensive mathematics and software. In general, the Shtil missile system can respond to 2 – 12 air targets simultaneously.
The firing range of this missile reaches 32 km against aerial targets flying above an altitude of 1,000 meters, and 15-18 km against air targets flying below an altitude of 1,000 meters.
The missile response time since the target is determined is 10-19 seconds, while the missile launch speed is 830 meters per second. Shtil has a length of up to 5 meters and weighs up to 1 ton.
