Starting May 1, Malaysia Lifts the Obligation to Wear Masks When Outdoors

Malaysia has announced that it will broadly lift Covid-19 restrictions from 1 May, including the obligation to wear masks when outdoors.

Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said the use of masks was still mandatory indoors, including in shopping centers and on public transportation.

"The use of masks outdoors is optional, but still recommended," he said at a press conference on Wednesday (27/4), as quoted by Channel News Asia.

Even so, Khairy said, the Malaysian government still urges the public to wear masks outdoors in crowded places, such as stadiums and night markets.

In addition, Khairy said, all Covid-19 test protocols for travelers who will enter Malaysia, both pre-departure and arrival, do not apply to those who have been fully vaccinated.

The Covid-19 test protocol also does not apply to those who have recovered from COVID-19 six to 60 days before the departure date, as well as travelers aged 12 years and under.

"However, those who have not been fully vaccinated against Covid-19 must still undergo this test, and undergo a mandatory five-day quarantine," Khairy said.

He added that travel insurance is no longer a prerequisite for travelers who will enter Malaysia.

In addition, check-in via the MySejahtera contact tracing app is no longer required and people who have not been vaccinated will also be allowed to enter the premises.

Malaysia fully opened its borders on April 1, more than two years after restricting entry and exit of travelers to its territory due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
